About

Transaero Airlines ceased all operations on October 26, 2015, following financial collapse. This guide provides historical information about the airline.

Transaero Airlines was Russia's second-largest airline and the country's first privately owned carrier, founded in 1990 during the collapse of the Soviet Union. Headquartered in Moscow, the airline grew from a small charter operator to become a major international carrier, competing directly with state-owned Aeroflot on many routes.

At its peak, Transaero operated a fleet of approximately 100 aircraft to over 150 destinations across Europe, Asia, North America, and the Middle East. The airline was particularly known for operating widebody aircraft including Boeing 747s on routes that competitors served with smaller aircraft, offering passengers more comfort on popular leisure routes.

Transaero positioned itself as a premium alternative to Aeroflot, with a strong focus on service quality and family travel. The airline offered three cabin classes on most flights and was recognized for its competitive pricing on international routes, particularly to popular Russian tourist destinations in Europe and Southeast Asia.

The airline's financial situation deteriorated rapidly in 2015 due to the Russian economic crisis, ruble devaluation, and accumulated debt exceeding 250 billion rubles (approximately $4 billion). After failed merger negotiations with Aeroflot, the Russian government revoked Transaero's operating certificate on October 26, 2015. Aeroflot assumed responsibility for transporting stranded Transaero passengers.
