Visa required for most nationalities; e-visa available for some countries
Overview
Russia is the world's largest country by land area, spanning 11 time zones from Eastern Europe to the Pacific. The country has a significant domestic aviation market connecting its vast territory, with over 200 airports serving cities from Kaliningrad in the west to Vladivostok in the east.
Moscow serves as the primary aviation hub with three major airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO), Domodedovo (DME), and Vnukovo (VKO). St. Petersburg Pulkovo (LED) is the second-largest hub. The flag carrier Aeroflot operates extensive domestic and international networks from its Sheremetyevo base.
Important note on current travel: Since February 2022, airspace restrictions have significantly impacted international travel to Russia. Most European Union, UK, US, and Canadian airlines have suspended flights, and Russian carriers are banned from EU, UK, and US airspace. Direct flight options are limited primarily to airlines from Turkey, UAE, China, Serbia, and some Asian/Middle Eastern carriers. Travelers should verify current flight availability and sanctions compliance before booking.
Major Airports
Moscow Area
Moscow has three major airports, each serving different airlines and routes:
| Airport | Code | Distance to Center | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sheremetyevo | SVO | 29 km (18 miles) | Aeroflot hub, international long-haul |
| Domodedovo | DME | 42 km (26 miles) | Second international hub, domestic |
| Vnukovo | VKO | 28 km (17 miles) | Domestic, low-cost carriers, charter |
Sheremetyevo (SVO) — Russia's busiest airport and Aeroflot's primary hub. Five terminals: B and C (domestic), D, E, and F (international). Terminals D, E, F connected to each other; B and C connected by inter-terminal train. Aeroexpress train to Belorussky Station (35-40 min). Currently serves most remaining international routes.
Domodedovo (DME) — Moscow's second-largest airport, a single large terminal complex. Previously major hub for Emirates, British Airways, and European carriers. Aeroexpress to Paveletsky Station (45 min).
Vnukovo (VKO) — Third Moscow airport, growing in importance. Hub for Pobeda (Aeroflot's low-cost subsidiary) and UTair. Closest to central Moscow. Aeroexpress to Kievsky Station (35 min).
Pro tip: Moscow airports are far apart (60-80 km between them). If connecting between airports, allow 4+ hours minimum. The Aeroexpress trains are the most reliable transport option.

- Location: 23 km south of city center
