Schengen Area member. ETIAS required for visa-exempt nationals from 2025

Overview

France is Western Europe's largest country and one of the world's most visited destinations, welcoming over 90 million tourists annually. The country serves as a major aviation gateway between Europe, Africa, and the Americas, with Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) ranking among Europe's busiest airports.

For international travelers, Paris is the primary entry point with two major airports: CDG handles most long-haul and international flights, while Orly (ORY) focuses on domestic and European routes. Beyond Paris, France has well-connected regional airports in Nice, Lyon, Marseille, and Toulouse serving both business and leisure travelers.

France's central European location and extensive TGV high-speed rail network make it an excellent base for exploring the continent.

Paris Airports

Charles de Gaulle (CDG) is Air France's global hub and France's busiest airport, located 25 km northeast of central Paris. It handles most transatlantic, Asian, and African routes. Connected to Paris by RER B train (35 minutes to city center) and multiple bus services.

Orly (ORY) is Paris's second airport, 13 km south of the city. It primarily serves domestic routes, European destinations, and overseas French territories. Connected by Orlyval + RER B or Tramway T7.

Which Paris airport? CDG for long-haul and most international flights. ORY for domestic France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and French Caribbean.

Regional Airports

Nice (NCE) serves the French Riviera and is France's third-busiest airport. Strong connections to UK, Germany, and Scandinavia. Located 6 km from Nice city center.

Lyon (LYS) is a growing hub in central-eastern France with good domestic and European coverage. Base for Transavia France.

Marseille (MRS) serves Provence and southern France. Growing low-cost carrier presence with Ryanair and Vueling.

Airlines

Flag Carrier

Air France (AF) is the national carrier and a founding member of the SkyTeam alliance. It operates a global network from its CDG hub with extensive coverage of Europe, Africa, North America, and Asia. Air France merged with KLM in 2004, creating the Air France-KLM Group.

Major Domestic & European Carriers

  • Air France operates the main domestic network
  • Transavia France is Air France's low-cost subsidiary, based at ORY
  • Air Corsica serves Corsica from mainland France

Low-Cost Carriers

France has significant low-cost carrier presence:

  • EasyJet has bases at CDG, ORY, LYS, NCE
  • Ryanair operates at secondary airports and some major hubs
  • Vueling strong presence at ORY and southern airports
  • Volotea focuses on regional routes, base at Nantes and Bordeaux

Getting Around

Domestic Flights

Domestic flying is common for longer distances:

  • Paris ↔ Nice: 1h 30min flight, multiple daily
  • Paris ↔ Marseille: 1h 20min flight
  • Paris ↔ Toulouse: 1h 15min flight

However, the TGV often competes effectively on journey time when including airport transit.

High-Speed Rail (TGV)

France has Europe's most extensive high-speed rail network. TGV trains reach 320 km/h and often beat flying on total journey time for mid-distance routes:

  • Paris ↔ Lyon: 2 hours by TGV vs. 1h flight + airport time
  • Paris ↔ Marseille: 3h 15min by TGV
  • Paris ↔ Bordeaux: 2h 15min by TGV
  • Paris ↔ Strasbourg: 1h 50min by TGV

Book via SNCF Connect or the SNCF app. Early booking offers significant savings (Ouigo, the budget TGV, starts from 10 EUR).

Car Rental

Useful for:

  • Wine regions (Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne)
  • Provence and the Riviera countryside
  • Normandy and Brittany
  • Areas not well served by rail

France drives on the right. Autoroutes (toll motorways) are fast but expensive. A vignette is not required for cars.

Regional Trains & Buses

TER regional trains connect smaller cities. FlixBus and BlaBlaCar Bus offer budget intercity options.

Best Time to Visit

Peak Season (June-August, December)

Summer brings highest prices and crowds, especially in Paris, the Riviera, and coastal areas. December peaks around Christmas markets and ski season.

Shoulder Season (April-May, September-October)

Best overall value. Pleasant weather across most regions. Paris and the Loire Valley are particularly beautiful in spring. September is ideal for wine regions during harvest.

Flights typically 15-25% cheaper than peak summer.

Off-Season (November-March)

Lowest prices except ski resorts and Christmas period. Paris is lovely but cold. Southern France (Nice, Marseille) remains mild.

Good for: budget travelers, ski holidays (Alps, Pyrenees), avoiding crowds at major attractions.

Regional Timing

  • French Riviera: May-June, September (avoid August crowds)
  • Alps: December-March for skiing, July-August for hiking
  • Provence: May-June for lavender, September for vineyards
  • Paris: April-May, September-October
