Léopold Sédar Senghor International Airport

Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS/GOBD) is Senegal's primary international airport, located near the town of Diass in the Thies Region, 47 km southeast of central Dakar. Named after Blaise Diagne, the first Black African elected to France's parliament in 1914, the airport opened on 7 December 2017, replacing the capacity-constrained Leopold Sedar Senghor International Airport closer to the city.

The airport has a single terminal building that handles both domestic and international flights. This makes navigation straightforward -- there are no terminal transfers to worry about. The terminal is modern, with a linear layout, clear signage in French and English, and a design capacity of 3 million passengers per year. In 2023, the airport handled 2.9 million passengers.

Air Senegal uses DSS as its home base. Major international carriers include Air France, Turkish Airlines, Brussels Airlines, TAP Portugal, Royal Air Maroc, Ethiopian Airlines, Emirates, Delta Air Lines, and several regional West African airlines including ASKY, Air Cote d'Ivoire, and Air Burkina.

The airport's biggest practical challenge is its distance from Dakar. The 47 km drive takes 45-90 minutes depending on traffic, and transport options are more limited than at many international airports.

DSS is located 47 km southeast of central Dakar, near the town of Diass. This is significantly farther than the old airport, which was within the city.

The toll motorway (Autoroute a peage) connects the airport to Dakar and significantly reduces travel time compared to surface roads. Toll fees are approximately XOF 2,600 (~$5 USD) for a car.

Uber does not operate in Senegal. However, several rideshare apps are available, along with traditional taxis.

App fare to Dakar city center: XOF 20,000-25,000 (~$36-45 USD) via Yango or Heetch. Availability at the airport can be inconsistent -- drivers sometimes refuse airport pickups due to long return trips. Have a backup plan.

Tips:

• Always agree on the fare before getting in
• Fares are higher at night and during peak arrival times
• Most taxis only accept cash (XOF). Withdraw from the ATMs in arrivals before heading to the taxi rank
• The fare should include toll fees -- confirm this before departing

Dakar Dem Dikk (DDD) Express Bus

The most affordable way to reach Dakar. Air-conditioned express buses run between the airport and Dakar.

Classic (Non-AC) Bus Lines

Cheaper DDD bus lines serve the airport during daytime hours (6:00-20:00):

These are slower and less comfortable than the express but significantly cheaper.

Train Express Regional (TER)

The TER currently runs between Dakar and Diamniadio (Phase 1, operational since December 2021). The Phase 2 extension to the airport is under construction and expected to open in the first half of 2026.

Until the airport extension opens, you can combine the TER with a bus or taxi:

1. Take the TER from Dakar to Diamniadio (46 min, XOF 1,500 second class / XOF 2,500 first class)
2. Transfer to a DDD bus from Diamniadio to AIBD (XOF 3,000, 20-30 min)

Once Phase 2 opens, the TER will connect Dakar to the airport directly in approximately 45 minutes.

The airport offers both short-term and long-term parking close to the terminal. The facility accommodates 820 vehicles.

The parking areas use automated number plate recognition and barrier systems. Check the airport website for current rates.

Dining options at DSS are limited, especially in the public (landside) area.

Before security: No restaurants or cafes in the public arrivals or departures hall. Eat before arriving or plan to eat airside.

After security (airside):

• Kebab shop: Quick-service grilled food
• Cafe/snack bar: Coffee, pastries, light snacks

Important notes:

• Prices are significantly higher than in Dakar -- expect to pay 2-3x city prices
• Selection is limited to 4-5 food outlets total
• No food is available landside, so transit passengers who exit the secure area will need to re-clear security to access dining
• Bring snacks if you have dietary restrictions

Free WiFi is available throughout the terminal with no time limit.

Two Orange shops are located in the arrivals hall, on the right side just after customs exit. Orange is the dominant mobile carrier in Senegal with the best nationwide coverage.

Other Carriers

Free Senegal and Expresso SIM cards are not readily available at the airport but can be purchased in Dakar:

• Free Senegal: Best value. SIM for XOF 1,000 with 2 GB data, 30 min calls, and free WhatsApp for 30 days. Their 20 GB package costs XOF 6,000 (~$11 USD)
• Expresso: Third carrier, less coverage, SIM for XOF 2,000

Registration Requirements

• Passport required for SIM activation
• Process takes 5-10 minutes
• Cash only at airport shops

Tip: Orange has the best rural and regional coverage. If staying only in Dakar, Free Senegal offers better value but must be purchased in the city. Consider an eSIM if your device supports it -- Orange Travel offers prepaid eSIM plans that can be set up before arrival.

Currency

Senegal uses the West African CFA Franc (XOF). The CFA franc is pegged to the Euro. As of February 2026: 1 USD = ~556 XOF and 1 EUR = ~656 XOF.

ATMs

Multiple ATMs from local and international banks are located in the arrivals hall. Most accept Visa and Mastercard.

ATM tips:

• Withdraw XOF directly rather than exchanging cash -- you will get a better rate
• Typical withdrawal limit: XOF 150,000-200,000 per transaction (~$270-360 USD)
• When the ATM asks to charge in your home currency or XOF, always choose XOF for the better rate

Currency Exchange

Exchange counters are located in the baggage claim area and public arrivals hall. Airport exchange rates are unfavorable.

Better alternatives:

• Use ATMs at the airport for immediate CFA needs
• Use a no-fee travel debit card (Wise, Revolut) for the best exchange rates
• Exchange offices in central Dakar offer better rates than the airport

Important: Senegal is largely a cash economy outside of hotels and large restaurants. Credit card acceptance is limited. Carry sufficient CFA for taxis, markets, and smaller establishments.

Shopping options at DSS are limited.

Duty-Free

A large duty-free shop is located immediately after the security checkpoint. Products include:

• Relay: Convenience store with snacks, drinks, magazines, and travel essentials

Landside

Small souvenir shops in the public areas sell Senegalese crafts at elevated prices. There is no supermarket or grocery store at the airport.

Tip: For authentic Senegalese crafts and art at fair prices, shop at the Marche Soumbedioune or Village des Arts in Dakar rather than at the airport.

DSS has two main lounges, both accessible via Priority Pass.

Priority Pass-affiliated credit cards provide lounge access at DSS. Check whether your card includes Priority Pass membership (common with cards like Chase Sapphire Reserve, Amex Platinum, and Capital One Venture X).

Hotels near DSS are mostly located in the nearby towns of Diass, Sindia, and the Petite-Cote beach area (Saly, Somone). There is no hotel inside or directly adjacent to the terminal.

For early morning flights, staying near the airport in Diass saves the long drive from Dakar. Guesthouses and small hotels in Diass start from approximately XOF 20,000-30,000 (~$36-54 USD) per night. The beach resort area of Saly, 30 km south of the airport, offers a wider range of accommodation from budget to luxury.

For travelers with long layovers who prefer to stay in Dakar, factor in 45-90 minutes each way for the drive to and from the airport.

Dakar is a vibrant West African capital on the Cap-Vert peninsula, known for its music scene, art, surfing, and cultural landmarks. French is the official language, though Wolof is widely spoken.

Getting Around Dakar

• Yango / Heetch: Most convenient for visitors. Download before arrival
• Car Rapides: Colorful minibuses that serve as the informal public transit system. Cheap (XOF 150-300) but chaotic for newcomers
• DDD city buses: More structured routes within Dakar

Practical Tips

• Language: French is official. Learn basic Wolof greetings -- "Nanga def?" (How are you?) is appreciated
• Weather: Hot and humid year-round. Rainy season June-October. Dry season (November-May) is peak tourist season
• Tipping: Not obligatory but appreciated. XOF 500-1,000 for good restaurant service
• Safety: Dakar is generally safe for travelers. Use normal precautions with valuables in crowded areas and markets
• Water: Drink bottled water. Widely available for XOF 300-500
