About

Arik Air is Nigeria's largest domestic airline by fleet size, headquartered in Lagos. Founded in 2002 and launching operations in 2006, Arik grew rapidly to become Nigeria's premier carrier, at its peak operating domestic, regional, and intercontinental services to Europe and North America using a modern fleet of Boeing and Bombardier aircraft.

Important Notice: Since February 2017, Arik Air has operated under receivership by the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), the government's "bad bank" established to resolve non-performing loans. The airline has faced significant financial difficulties, resulting in a reduced fleet, limited route network, and operational disruptions. Travelers should verify flight availability and consider backup options when booking.

Arik Air previously operated long-haul flights to London Heathrow and New York JFK using Airbus A340 aircraft, but these international services have been suspended. Current operations focus primarily on domestic Nigerian routes and limited regional West African services.

Tips & Tricks

Before Booking

  1. Verify flight status - Check that your route is currently operating before booking
  2. Consider alternatives - Air Peace, Dana Air, and other Nigerian carriers may offer more reliable service on some routes
  3. Book directly with Arik - Easier to manage changes if issues arise
  4. Flexible dates - Have backup travel dates in case of cancellation

Payment

  1. NGN vs USD - Domestic flights priced in Nigerian Naira; some international routes quote USD
  2. Payment methods - Credit cards accepted; Nigerian bank transfers for local bookings
  3. Confirm payment - Verify your booking is confirmed and payment processed before traveling

At the Airport

  1. Arrive early - Allow extra time for potential delays at check-in
  2. Confirm at counter - Verify your flight is operating when you check in
  3. Keep documentation - Retain all receipts and boarding passes
  4. LOS Terminal - Domestic terminal can be congested; allow time for security

On the Day of Travel

  1. Monitor flight status - Check for updates via phone or airport information
  2. Charge your phone - Communication is important if schedules change
  3. Have airline contact - Keep customer service numbers accessible
  4. Bring food and water - Don't rely on in-flight service or airport facilities during delays

Managing Disruptions

  1. Stay calm - Staff are often dealing with challenging situations
  2. Document everything - Note times, names, and what you're told
  3. Consider travel insurance - Highly recommended for Nigerian domestic travel
  4. Alternative transport - Know ground transportation options between major cities

Common Issues

  • Flights may consolidate (combined with other flights) during low-demand periods
  • Aircraft changes can affect seat assignments
  • Rebooking options may be limited during peak periods
  • Compensation for delays/cancellations follows Nigerian regulations (limited protections)
