Introduction
Félix-Houphouët-Boigny International Airport (ABJ), also known as Port-Bouët Airport, is the primary airport serving Abidjan, the economic capital of Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire). Located in the commune of Port-Bouët, about 16 km southeast of the Plateau business district, ABJ is the busiest airport in Francophone West Africa and a key regional hub.
The airport has a single terminal building divided into two sections:
- International departures: Upper level, with duty-free shopping, restaurants, and the AERIA VIP Lounge after security
- International arrivals: Lower level, with baggage claim, currency exchange, and SIM card vendors
- Domestic section: Separate area for Air Côte d'Ivoire domestic flights to Bouaké, Korhogo, Man, Odienné, and San-Pédro
The terminal is managed by AERIA, a private Ivorian company that has held the airport concession since 1996. Current capacity is about 2 million passengers per year, and the airport handled 2.3 million in 2023. Expansion plans are underway to increase capacity to 6-8 million passengers.
ABJ serves as the hub for Air Côte d'Ivoire, the national carrier, and is well-connected to European, African, and Middle Eastern destinations. Major airlines include Air France, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, Brussels Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Kenya Airways, among others.

Getting In and Out
ABJ is located 16 km southeast of the Plateau district (Abidjan's city center), in the commune of Port-Bouët on the south side of the Ebrié Lagoon.
Typical travel times from the airport:
| Destination | Distance | Time (light traffic) | Time (heavy traffic) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plateau (city center) | 16 km | 20-30 min | 45-75 min |
| Cocody | 18 km | 25-35 min | 50-80 min |
| Marcory / Treichville | 10 km | 15-20 min | 30-50 min |
| Yopougon | 25 km | 35-50 min | 60-90+ min |
| Grand-Bassam | 35 km | 40-50 min | 60-75 min |
Traffic warning: Abidjan traffic is severe, especially during morning (7-9 AM) and evening (5-8 PM) rush hours. The bridges connecting the southern communes to Plateau and Cocody (Pont Houphouët-Boigny and Pont Henri Konan Bédié) create major bottlenecks. Allow extra time if your hotel is north of the lagoon.
Public Transit
SOTRA Bus
SOTRA (Société des Transports Abidjanais) operates Bus Line 6 between the airport and central Abidjan (Gare Sud in Plateau).
- Fare: 200 XOF ($0.35)
- Frequency: Every 20-45 minutes (irregular)
- Hours: Approximately 5:45 AM to 7:30 PM
- Journey time: 45-60 minutes to Plateau
- Stops: Multiple stops through Port-Bouët, Marcory, and Treichville before reaching Plateau
Limitations: Buses can be crowded, do not run at night, and schedules are unreliable. Not recommended with heavy luggage.
Gbakas (Minibuses)
Informal minibuses called "gbakas" run along major routes through Port-Bouët. Fare is 200-300 XOF ($0.35-0.50) per segment. Gbakas do not enter the airport grounds — you would need to walk to the main road (Boulevard de l'Aéroport). Not practical for travelers with luggage or unfamiliar with the city.
Woro-Woros (Shared Taxis)
Shared taxis known as "woro-woros" follow fixed routes and depart when full. Each seat costs 100-200 XOF. Like gbakas, these operate on the main road outside the airport and are not practical for most travelers.
Water Buses
SOTRA also operates water buses (bateaux-bus) on the Ebrié Lagoon connecting Treichville, Plateau, Cocody Blockhauss, and Yopougon. The fare is 200 XOF per ride. These do not serve the airport directly, but can be useful once in the city.
Future: Abidjan Metro
Construction of the Abidjan Metro began in 2018, with a planned station near the airport. Commercial service is expected around 2027. This will significantly improve airport-to-city connectivity once operational.
Parking
ABJ has two uncovered parking lots, P1 and P2, with a combined capacity of approximately 750 spaces.
| Lot | Spaces | Serves |
|---|---|---|
| P1 | ~668 | Main terminal |
| P2 | ~165 | Terminal overflow |
Rates
- 500 XOF ($0.85) per hour
- Open 24/7
Payment
Payment is accepted at automatic kiosks or manual cash registers. Note that kiosks may only accept 200 and 500 XOF coins — bring exact change or pay at the manual registers.
Subscriptions
AERIA offers a "frequent clients" plan with unlimited parking access. Contact the parking service at +225 27 21 75 79 00 or email contact@aeria-ci.com.
Warning: Parking lots can fill up during peak travel periods and holidays. Arrive early or consider a drop-off instead.
Food
Dining options exist both landside (before security) and airside (after security), though the selection is limited compared to major international hubs.
Landside (Public Area)
- Paul Bakery: Coffee, fresh pastries, and sandwiches. A reliable option for quick bites before check-in or while waiting for arrivals
- Small snack bars and cafes: Light refreshments available in the public hall
Airside (Departure Zone)
After passing security and passport control, the departure lounge has a wider selection:
- Restaurants offering both international and local Ivorian cuisine
- Bars serving drinks and light meals
- Cafes with coffee and snacks near gate areas
Tips
- Prices inside the terminal are higher than in the city
- If you have time before your flight, the ONOMO Hotel restaurant (500m from the terminal) offers an afro-fusion menu at more reasonable prices
- For late-night departures, food options may be limited — eat before arriving at the airport
WiFi
WiFi is available at the airport, managed by AERIA.
- Network: Available in designated areas including the VIP Lounge and departures lounge
- Cost: Free for the first 30 minutes in the public hall; charged after that
- Speed: Adequate for browsing and email; not reliable for video calls or large downloads
- Lounges: The AERIA VIP Lounge has faster, more reliable WiFi included with access
For reliable connectivity, purchase a local SIM card with data from vendors in the arrivals hall.
Local SIM
SIM cards from the three main Ivorian carriers are available from vendors in the arrivals hall. Sellers typically wear branded clothing from the operators and will help set up your phone.
Carriers
| Carrier | SIM Price (XOF) | Coverage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orange | 500 ($0.85) | Best coverage and speed | Includes 500 XOF credit + 50 MB data |
| MTN | 500 ($0.85) | Equal coverage to Orange, slightly slower | Good value data plans |
| Moov Africa | 500 ($0.85) | Weakest coverage | Kit IZY includes 100 MB + 2,500 XOF credit |
Recommended Data Plans (Orange)
| Plan | Price (XOF) | USD | Includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7-day bundle | 1,500 | $2.50 | 1.7 GB data + 60 min calls |
| 30-day bundle | 3,000 | $5 | 3.7 GB data + 60 min calls |
| 30-day large | 10,000 | $17 | 12 GB data + 180 min calls |
Important Notes
- Passport required for SIM registration (photo and fingerprint may be taken)
- Airport vendors are unofficial resellers — no dedicated SIM card shops in the terminal. They sell pre-registered SIM cards for about 1,500-2,000 XOF ($2.50-3.50)
- If arriving very late at night or very early in the morning, vendors may not be present. In that case, buy a SIM at an official Orange or MTN store in the city
- Orange and MTN are both recommended. Orange has the fastest speeds; MTN offers slightly better value on larger data plans
- eSIM options from providers like Airalo or Holafly are available if you prefer to set up connectivity before arrival
Cash & ATMs
Currency
Ivory Coast uses the West African CFA Franc (XOF), which is pegged to the Euro at a fixed rate of 655.957 XOF = 1 EUR. The approximate exchange rate is 600 XOF = $1 USD (rates fluctuate with EUR/USD).
ATMs
ATMs are available in the arrivals hall. Major banks with airport presence include:
- SGBCI (Société Générale)
- BICICI (BNP Paribas subsidiary)
- Ecobank
ATM tips:
- Visa cards are widely accepted at ATMs
- MasterCard acceptance is more limited — check with your bank before travel
- ATMs dispense large denomination notes (5,000 and 10,000 XOF). Break these at hotels or shops early, as taxis and small vendors rarely have change
- Withdrawal fees vary by bank; expect 1,500-3,000 XOF ($2.50-5) per transaction on top of your home bank's fees
Currency Exchange
Exchange bureaux operate in the arrivals hall. Airport exchange rates include unfavorable markups. For better rates:
- Use ATMs instead of exchange counters
- Consider a travel-friendly card (Wise, Revolut) that offers near-market exchange rates
- Exchange only what you need at the airport and get better rates in the city
Cash Tips
- Ivory Coast is largely a cash economy. Markets, taxis, restaurants, and small shops require cash
- Credit cards are accepted at major hotels, upscale restaurants, and some supermarkets
- Mobile money (Orange Money, MTN MoMo, Moov Money) is widely used by locals — useful if you get a local SIM and set up an account
Shopping
Duty-Free
Dufry operates duty-free shopping in the international departures area after security. Selection includes:
- Perfumes and cosmetics
- Alcohol and tobacco
- Chocolates and confectionery
- Limited electronics
You can pre-order online at abidjan.shopdutyfree.com and collect at the airport for a reported 20% discount.
Local Products
- Ivorian chocolate: Ivory Coast is the world's largest cocoa producer. Local chocolate makes a good gift
- Wax print fabrics: Colorful West African textiles
- Souvenirs and crafts: Wood carvings, masks, and local artworks available in terminal shops
Tips
- Prices inside the airport are marked up significantly
- For better selection and prices on local crafts, visit the Artisanal Market of Cocody or Treichville Market in the city before your departure
- A luggage wrapping service is available near the check-in area

Destination Tips
Abidjan is West Africa's most cosmopolitan city, a sprawling metropolis of over 5 million people spread across communes on both sides of the Ebrié Lagoon. French is the official language — basic French is essential for getting around, as English is not widely spoken outside international hotels.
Neighborhoods to Explore
- Plateau (20 min from airport): The business and administrative center, home to St. Paul's Cathedral, the National Museum (Musée des Civilisations de Côte d'Ivoire), and the Grand Mosque. The "Manhattan of Abidjan" for its skyline
- Cocody (25 min from airport): Upscale residential area popular with expats. Home to the Artisanal Market and the Institut Pasteur Reptile Museum
- Treichville (15 min from airport): Vibrant market district across the bridge from Plateau. The Treichville Market is famous for fabrics, spices, and handicrafts
- Marcory / Zone 4 (15 min from airport): Nightlife and restaurant district. The "Rue Princesse" area is known for maquis (open-air restaurants and bars)
Top Attractions
- Banco National Park: Tropical rainforest within the city limits, with walking trails. 30 min from the airport
- St. Paul's Cathedral: Striking modern architecture by Italian architect Aldo Spirito. Free entry
- Musée des Civilisations de Côte d'Ivoire: Traditional masks, sculptures, and artifacts from across the country
- Île Boulay: Small island in the lagoon accessible by boat from Treichville. Quiet beaches and seafood restaurants
Day Trips
- Grand-Bassam (45 min east): UNESCO World Heritage Site and former colonial capital. Faded French colonial architecture, beaches, and craft markets. Worth a half-day visit
- Jacqueville (2 hours west): Quiet beach town on the Atlantic coast, accessible by ferry from Abidjan
- Yamoussoukro (3 hours north): The official capital, home to the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace — the largest church in the world by some measures
Practical Tips
- Language: French is essential. Learn basic phrases before arrival. Market vendors and taxi drivers speak little to no English
- Weather: Tropical climate. Hot and humid year-round (24-32°C). Main rainy season is May-July, with a shorter rainy period in October-November. Dry season (December-March) is the most comfortable time to visit
- Safety: Exercise standard precautions. Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas. Petty theft and pickpocketing occur in crowded markets. Use registered taxis or rideshare apps
- Tipping: Not expected but appreciated. Round up taxi fares. Leave 5-10% at restaurants if service is not included
- Food: Try attiéké (cassava couscous), alloco (fried plantains), and garba (attiéké with fried tuna) at local maquis. Abidjan has a strong cafe culture influenced by French traditions
- Change problem: Nobody seems to have small change in Abidjan. ATMs dispense 10,000 XOF notes that vendors are reluctant to break. Get change at hotels and supermarkets whenever possible
