Introduction
Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) is the largest airport in Northwest China and the primary gateway to Xi'an, the ancient capital of China and home to the Terracotta Warriors. Located 34 km northwest of Xi'an city center, the airport handled over 47 million passengers in 2024, serving as a major domestic hub and growing international connection point.
The airport has four terminals with distinct purposes:
- Terminal 1 (T1): Currently closed.
- Terminal 2 (T2): Domestic flights. Served by 9 Air, Spring Airlines, and other domestic carriers. Located 700 meters from Terminal 3.
- Terminal 3 (T3): Domestic flights with Air China, Hainan Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, and other major domestic carriers. The largest terminal until T5 opened.
- Terminal 5 (T5): International terminal opened February 20, 2025. All international flights and China Eastern Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, and China United Airlines operate from here. Inspired by Tang Dynasty architecture with 700,000 square meters of floor space.
Important: Since February 2025, all international flights have moved to Terminal 5. Verify your terminal when booking.
Unique feature: The CWAG Museum of Heritage inside Terminal 5 displays 121 Tang Dynasty artifacts uncovered during airport construction, including terracotta musicians. Free to visit and worth exploring during layovers.
