Introduction

Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (SZX) is China's fifth-busiest airport and a major aviation hub in South China. Located approximately 32 km northwest of Shenzhen city center in Bao'an District, the airport serves as the primary hub for Shenzhen Airlines and Donghai Airlines, with significant operations from China Southern Airlines and Hainan Airlines.

The airport currently operates from a single terminal:

  • Terminal 3 (T3): The main terminal opened in 2013, featuring a distinctive manta ray-shaped design. This massive terminal handles all commercial passenger flights, both domestic and international.

Terminal 3 layout:

  • Domestic Departures: 3rd floor, gates in the main building and satellite concourse
  • International Departures: Southern section of the terminal
  • Arrivals: Ground floor with direct access to metro, buses, and ground transportation
  • Satellite Concourse: Remote gates connected via underground passage

Note: Terminals 1 and 2 are no longer in passenger service. All flights operate from T3.

A third runway opened in November 2025, increasing the airport's capacity significantly. As China's technology capital, Shenzhen Airport handles extensive domestic routes to over 100 Chinese cities, plus growing international connections throughout Asia.

Greater Bay Area Airports

Shenzhen sits within the Pearl River Delta's "Greater Bay Area," making cross-boundary connections common for travelers.

Hong Kong International (HKG) - 38 km south

  • Major international hub with global connections
  • Connected via ferry from Shenzhen (Shekou or Fuyong ports)
  • Better for long-haul international flights

Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) - 99 km north

Macau (MFM) - 75 km southwest

  • Budget carrier options to Asia
  • Ferry connections via Shekou

Unique Feature: Ferry Connections to Hong Kong

SZX has direct ferry connections to Hong Kong International Airport via Fuyong Port (Shenzhen Airport Ferry Terminal), located about 10 km from the terminal. Transit passengers can connect to Hong Kong flights without entering Hong Kong immigration:

Route Time Frequency Notes
Fuyong → HKG SkyPier 50 min Several daily Direct airport-to-airport
Shekou → HKG SkyPier 30 min Hourly City port option

Minimum connection time for ferry: Allow 3-4 hours for airport-to-airport ferry transfers.

Pro tip: For destinations only served by HKG (like long-haul to Europe/Americas), compare flying into SZX + ferry versus flying directly to HKG. Sometimes SZX has better domestic connections.
