About

DEFUNCT AIRLINE: Eastern Airways ceased operations on October 27, 2025, and formally entered administration on November 6, 2025. This guide provides historical information about this UK regional carrier that served the British aviation market for 28 years.

Eastern Airways was a British regional airline headquartered at Humberside Airport near the village of Kirmington in North Lincolnshire, England. The airline was co-founded by Bryan Huxford and Richard Lake and started operations in December 1997 with a scheduled route between Humberside and Aberdeen using a leased Swearingen Metro, following KLM UK's withdrawal from the route.

The airline built its network around the North Sea offshore energy industry, connecting oil and gas workers to Aberdeen from various UK airports. At its peak, Eastern Airways carried approximately 1.3 million passengers annually and operated a mixed fleet of turboprop and regional jet aircraft.

Eastern Airways was not a member of any global alliance but maintained wet-lease and ACMI agreements with other carriers, most notably KLM Cityhopper.

Final Collapse (October 2025): Following KLM Cityhopper's termination of its contract on October 5, 2025, Eastern Airways filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators on October 27, 2025. All flight operations were suspended immediately. On October 31, the majority of approximately 330 staff were made redundant. The company formally entered administration on November 6, 2025, under the management of Jamie Miller and Gareth Harris of RSM UK Restructuring Advisory.

The airline's collapse came after years of financial difficulties following the COVID-19 pandemic. Company filings showed profits had plunged from GBP 1.55 million to GBP 454,000, while debts ballooned from GBP 4.8 million to GBP 25.97 million. The two trading entities generated combined turnover of approximately GBP 60 million in 2024 but posted a net loss of GBP 19.7 million.
