Introduction

Rio de Janeiro-Galeao International Airport (GIG), officially named Aeroporto Internacional do Rio de Janeiro/Galeao - Antonio Carlos Jobim, is the main international gateway to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Named after the legendary bossa nova composer, the airport is located on Ilha do Governador (Governor's Island), approximately 20 km north of downtown Rio and 23 km from the famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema.

The airport has two terminals, though operations are consolidated:

  • Terminal 1: Currently not handling commercial flights. Houses the Rio Aeroporto Hotel and administrative offices. Connected to Terminal 2 via a covered walkway.
  • Terminal 2: Handles all commercial operations for both domestic and international flights. Domestic flights use gates 1-10, while international flights use gates 11-27.

Terminal 2 is a modern, renovated facility with three levels:

  • Level 0: Arrivals, immigration, baggage claim
  • Level 1: Dining, shops, lounges, services
  • Level 2: Check-in, security, boarding gates

GIG serves as a hub for Brazilian carriers LATAM, GOL, and Azul, with international service from major carriers including American Airlines, Delta, United, Air France-KLM, TAP Portugal, Lufthansa, and Emirates.

Santos Dumont Airport (SDU)

Rio de Janeiro has a second airport, Santos Dumont (SDU), located just 2 km from downtown in the city center.

When to use each airport:

  • GIG (Galeao): All international flights and most domestic routes
  • SDU (Santos Dumont): Domestic flights only, especially the popular Sao Paulo shuttle (Ponte Aerea) and routes to Brasilia, Belo Horizonte

Why SDU matters: If you're connecting from an international flight at GIG to a domestic flight at SDU, or vice versa, you'll need ground transportation between airports. SDU's city-center location offers stunning views of Sugarloaf Mountain on approach and much faster access to Copacabana, Ipanema, and downtown.

Connecting between GIG and SDU:

Method Time Cost Notes
Taxi 30-50 min R$90-150 (~$18-30 USD) Traffic dependent
Uber/99 30-50 min R$60-100 (~$12-20 USD) Often cheaper than taxi
Bus (2145 line) 50-70 min R$5-8 (~$1-2 USD) Operates 5:30am-10:30pm

Minimum connection time between airports: Allow 4-5 hours between flights at different airports to account for immigration (if arriving internationally), baggage, ground transport, and check-in.

Taxi & Rideshare

Uber and 99 (Brazilian rideshare app owned by DiDi) are widely available at GIG. Both apps are reliable, with 99 often offering better prices.

Pickup locations (Terminal 2):

  • Exit arrivals and follow signs to "Aplicativos" or rideshare pickup
  • Designated pickup at Door D (international arrivals area)
  • Orange, green, and purple zones outside the arrivals hall
  • Free staging area for up to 300 rideshare drivers ensures short wait times

  • Two types: Yellow (standard, metered) and Blue (executive, fixed rate)
  • Fixed-rate executive taxis can be booked at counters inside arrivals
  • Safer than street taxis; all drivers are registered

Tip: Download the 99 app before arrival. It works similarly to Uber and often has better availability and pricing in Brazil.

Network name: "RIO GALEAO Wi-Fi" or "GIG-WIFI"

How to connect:

  1. Select the network
  2. Open your browser
  3. Register with email or accept terms
  4. Connect

Quality: Adequate for browsing and email. Speed can vary during peak hours. For reliable high-speed access, use lounge WiFi.

Local SIM

Important: SIM cards are difficult to purchase at GIG airport. Unlike many international airports, there are no major carrier stores (Vivo, Claro, TIM) in the terminal.

At the airport:

  • Drogarias Farmais (pharmacy in arrivals) reportedly sells basic SIM cards, but selection is limited
  • Prices and availability are inconsistent

Better alternatives:

  1. eSIM (Recommended): Purchase an eSIM (Airalo, Holafly, or similar) before departure. Works immediately upon arrival with no registration hassle.

  2. City purchase: Buy a SIM at any shopping mall in Rio. Carrier stores are common at:

    • Shopping Leblon
    • Rio Sul Shopping
    • BarraShopping
  3. Major carriers:

    • Vivo: Best nationwide coverage
    • Claro: Good urban coverage
    • TIM: Tourist-friendly (often doesn't require CPF)

Requirements: Typically requires passport. Some stores may ask for a CPF (Brazilian tax ID), though TIM offers tourist SIMs that only require a passport.

Tip: If you need immediate connectivity, order an eSIM before your trip. It's the most reliable option for international visitors to Brazil.

Cash & ATMs

ATMs (caixas eletronicos) are located throughout Terminal 2 on all levels.

Banks with ATMs at GIG:

  • Banco do Brasil
  • Bradesco
  • Itau
  • Santander
  • Banco24Horas network (most reliable for international cards)

Tips:

  • Banco24Horas ATMs work best with international Visa, Mastercard, and Cirrus cards
  • Typical withdrawal limit: R$1,000-1,500 per transaction
  • ATM fees: R$15-25 per withdrawal plus your bank's foreign transaction fee
  • Important: When prompted, choose to be charged in Brazilian Reais (BRL), not your home currency, for better exchange rates

Currency Exchange:

  • Exchange bureaus located in arrivals and departures
  • Rates are unfavorable (8-15% markup typical)
  • Better to use ATMs or exchange only small amounts for immediate needs

Credit cards: Widely accepted in Rio. Visa and Mastercard work almost everywhere. American Express has more limited acceptance.

Shopping

Terminal 2 offers duty-free shopping for international travelers and general retail.

Duty-Free (Dufry):

  • Located in Terminal 2 international departures (after passport control)
