About

HK Express is Hong Kong's only low-cost carrier, operating from Hong Kong International Airport to destinations across Asia. Founded in 2004 as Hong Kong Express Airways (originally a full-service regional carrier), the airline relaunched as a low-cost carrier in 2013 under new ownership. In 2019, Cathay Pacific acquired full ownership of HK Express, making it part of the Cathay Group while maintaining its independent low-cost operation.

As a Cathay Pacific subsidiary, HK Express offers something unique among Asian LCCs: full integration with Asia Miles, Cathay's frequent flyer program. This means passengers can earn and redeem Asia Miles on HK Express flights, bridging the gap between budget travel and premium loyalty benefits.

The airline operates an all-Airbus fleet of A320 and A321 aircraft to over 25 destinations, with a strong focus on Japan (including secondary cities), South Korea, Southeast Asia, and Mainland China. HK Express positions itself as the affordable option for Hong Kong travelers, particularly popular for weekend getaways to nearby Asian destinations.

Tips & Tricks

Booking:

  • Book directly on hkexpress.com for easier changes and Asia Miles earning
  • Compare total cost (fare + bags + seats) to Cathay Pacific - the gap narrows with add-ons
  • Basic fares are genuinely cheap if you travel light
  • U-Fly bundle often provides best value for typical travelers
  • Book bags at time of purchase - prices increase in Manage Booking

Baggage:

  • The 7kg cabin limit is strictly enforced - budget bags and weigh at home
  • HK Express weighs bags at the gate, not just at check-in
  • Pool checked baggage with travel companions on the same booking
  • Golf and ski equipment at standard baggage rates makes HK Express good for sports trips to Japan

At the Airport:

  • Check in online to skip queues
  • Terminal 1, Row K at HKG
  • Arrive early during peak times (Fridays, holiday periods)
  • Asia Miles Gold/Diamond get priority boarding

In-Flight:

  • Download entertainment before flying - no streaming available
  • Pre-order meals for hot food options
  • Bring your own snacks and empty water bottle (fill after security)
  • No power outlets - charge devices before boarding

Japan Routes:

  • HK Express serves Japanese cities that Cathay doesn't - Hiroshima, Kagoshima, Takamatsu
  • Great for Japan Rail Pass trips - fly into one city, out another
  • Secondary airports often closer to city centers

Asia Miles Strategy:

  • Earn on every HK Express purchase including add-ons
  • Use Cathay credit cards for bonus earning
  • Redeem Asia Miles for Cathay Pacific premium cabins
  • Diamond status lounge access works for HK Express flights at HKG

Avoiding Fees:

  • Book everything online - airport prices are double
  • Pack light - 7kg cabin allowance is enough for short trips
  • Check weight at home before leaving
  • Random seat assignment is fine on short flights - save the fee

Best Value:

  • Japan secondary cities (no competition, reasonable prices)
  • Weekday flights significantly cheaper than weekends
  • Off-peak seasons (avoid Golden Week, Chinese New Year, school holidays)
  • Basic fare + no bags for genuine day-trip deals to nearby destinations
