About

SpiceJet is India's second-largest low-cost carrier by market share, providing budget air travel across the subcontinent and beyond. Headquartered in Gurgaon, Haryana (near Delhi), the airline operates over 300 daily flights to 54 domestic and 15 international destinations across Asia and the Middle East.

Founded in 2005 by Indian-American entrepreneur Ajay Singh, SpiceJet launched operations with a focus on affordable air travel for Indian consumers. The airline has experienced periods of rapid growth interspersed with financial challenges, including a temporary grounding of its Boeing 737 MAX fleet. Despite these hurdles, SpiceJet remains a significant player in Indian aviation.

SpiceJet operates a mixed fleet of Boeing 737-800s, 737 MAX 8s, and Bombardier Q400 turboprops for regional routes. The airline is not part of any global alliance but has codeshare agreements with Emirates, among other carriers.

Tips & Tricks

Booking:

  1. Compare total cost - Add bags and seats to base fare before comparing to Air India or IndiGo
  2. Book directly on spicejet.com - Better change/refund support than OTAs
  3. Consider SpiceFlex bundle - Often worth it if you need baggage and flexibility
  4. Watch for sales - SpiceJet runs frequent promotions with deeply discounted fares
  5. Check 737 vs Q400 - Regional Q400 flights have smaller overhead bins

Packing:

  1. Weigh your cabin bag - SpiceJet enforces the 7 kg limit at check-in and gates
  2. Pre-book checked baggage - Save 20-40% versus airport purchase
  3. Consider 15 kg bag - Often sufficient for domestic trips, cheapest option

At the Airport:

  1. Use web check-in - Saves time and ensures seat assignment
  2. Arrive early - 2 hours domestic, 3 hours international (Indian airports can be busy)
  3. Screenshot boarding pass - WiFi can be unreliable at some airports
  4. Gate closes 25 minutes early - SpiceJet denies boarding to late passengers
  5. Weigh bags before check-in - Excess fees add up quickly

During Flight:

  1. Bring your own entertainment - No screens or streaming on most aircraft
  2. Bring snacks - Onboard prices are higher than airport shops
  3. Pre-order meals - Guaranteed availability and sometimes better selection
  4. Choose SpiceMax for long flights - Extra legroom worth it on 2+ hour routes

Earning Status:

  1. Join SpiceClub - Free to enroll, earn points on all flights
  2. Book ancillaries - Earn points on bags, meals, and seats
  3. Use co-branded credit card - Stack benefits with SpiceClub

Common Pitfalls:

  • No checked baggage in base fare (unlike IndiGo on most routes)
  • Cabin bags over 7 kg charged INR 500+ per kg excess
  • Last-minute seat selection at airport is expensive
  • Q400 flights have smaller overhead bins (regional routes)
  • Financial challenges have occasionally affected flight schedules
