About

Air Macau is the flag carrier airline of the Macau Special Administrative Region, headquartered in the Macau Tower. Founded in 1994 following the handover preparations period, Air Macau was established to serve as Macau's international carrier and has grown to become the dominant airline at Macau International Airport.

Air China holds a 66% majority stake in Air Macau, making it a subsidiary of the Chinese flag carrier. This ownership structure provides strong connections to mainland China's aviation network and allows Air Macau passengers to participate in the Phoenix Miles frequent flyer program. Despite the Air China relationship, Air Macau is not a member of Star Alliance and operates independently.

Air Macau operates a modern all-Airbus narrowbody fleet consisting of A320neo, A321neo, and A319 aircraft. The airline focuses on connecting Macau's thriving casino and tourism industry to key markets across Greater China, Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, and Taiwan. Routes are tailored to serve the millions of visitors who travel to Macau annually for gaming, entertainment, and the city's UNESCO World Heritage historic center.

Tips & Tricks

Booking:

  • Compare prices on airmacau.com.mo directly with OTAs—direct booking often provides better rebooking options
  • Watch for promotional fares to popular destinations like Bangkok and Taipei
  • Business Class upgrades can be good value on longer routes to Japan/Korea
  • If connecting via mainland China, check if separate tickets through Air China offer better total value

Baggage:

  • The 7 kg carry-on limit is strictly enforced—pack light or check bags
  • Prepay excess baggage online for potential discounts
  • MOP, HKD, and CNY all accepted (approximately equivalent value)
  • Golf equipment is popular for Macau visitors—book in advance if traveling with clubs

At Macau Airport:

  • MFM is a compact, easy-to-navigate airport
  • Arrive 2 hours before international flights
  • Ferry services connect directly between airport and Hong Kong—convenient for HKG connections
  • Free WiFi throughout terminal

Phoenix Miles Strategy:

  • Join Phoenix Miles before your first flight to earn from day one
  • Credit flights to Phoenix Miles for Air China network benefits
  • Remember miles expire at 36 months—redeem before they expire
  • Status earned on Phoenix Miles recognized on Air China flights
  • Consider Air China flights for Star Alliance lounge access (Air Macau alone doesn't provide alliance benefits)

Connections:

  • Air China codeshares extend Air Macau's effective network
  • For connections to/from Hong Kong, the ferry service may be faster than flying via a third city
  • Macau-Hong Kong bridge provides ground transport alternative for HKG connections

Macau Specifics:

  • Peak seasons: Chinese New Year, Golden Week (October), major boxing events
  • Book well in advance during casino tournament periods and major events
  • Hotel packages sometimes include airfare—compare total costs
  • Cotai ferry terminal connects airport to Hong Kong (no need to clear Macau immigration)

Common Issues:

  • Limited flight frequencies on some routes—plan alternatives if disrupted
  • Website occasionally has English translation gaps—switch to Chinese for more options
  • No Star Alliance benefits despite Air China ownership—plan accordingly for lounge access
  • Some routes are seasonal—verify schedules before planning trips
