About
Jet Airways suspended all operations on April 17, 2019, following a severe debt crisis. Revival attempts by the Jalan-Kalrock consortium have had limited success, with commercial operations remaining effectively non-existent as of early 2025. This guide provides historical information about the airline.
Jet Airways (India) Limited was India's largest private airline prior to its collapse, headquartered in Mumbai. At its peak, the airline carried over 22 million passengers annually and operated a fleet of approximately 124 aircraft to over 60 destinations across India, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America.
Founded in 1992 by Naresh Goyal, Jet Airways commenced operations on May 5, 1993, with a fleet of four leased Boeing 737-300s. The airline rapidly expanded during India's aviation boom, becoming synonymous with premium service in the Indian market. Jet Airways was known for its high service standards, punctuality, and professional crew, often described as India's answer to Singapore Airlines.
Unlike many of its peers, Jet Airways never joined a global airline alliance. However, it maintained extensive codeshare partnerships with Etihad Airways (which acquired a 24% stake in 2013), Delta Air Lines, Air France, and KLM, providing connectivity to international networks.
The airline's financial troubles intensified through 2018-2019, stemming from high debt levels, intense competition from low-cost carriers like IndiGo and SpiceJet, rising fuel costs, and a weakening rupee. After failing to secure emergency funding and with debt exceeding $1.2 billion, Jet Airways was forced to suspend all operations in April 2019.
