About

Atlas Air is one of the world's largest cargo airlines and the leading provider of ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) and CMI (Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) aircraft leasing services. Headquartered in White Plains, New York, with flight operations based in Erlanger, Kentucky (near Cincinnati), Atlas Air operates the world's largest fleet of Boeing 747 freighter aircraft.

Founded in 1992, Atlas Air grew from a small charter cargo operator into a global logistics powerhouse. The airline pioneered the ACMI leasing model, providing fully-crewed and serviced aircraft to airlines, freight forwarders, and e-commerce companies that need cargo capacity without owning aircraft. Major customers include DHL, Amazon, the U.S. Military Air Mobility Command, and numerous international freight forwarders.

In March 2023, an investor group led by Apollo Global Management, together with J.F. Lehman & Company and Hill City Capital, completed the acquisition of Atlas Air Worldwide in a transaction valued at approximately $5.2 billion. The company continues to operate under the Atlas Air Worldwide name.

Atlas Air Worldwide also owns Polar Air Cargo (a former joint venture with DHL, now wholly owned) and previously owned Southern Air, consolidating its position as the dominant independent cargo airline operator in the United States.
