Introduction

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) is the only international airport in Mauritius, located in Plaine Magnien in the southeastern part of the island. Named after the first Prime Minister of Mauritius, it serves as the hub for Air Mauritius and handles all commercial passenger traffic to and from the island.

The airport has a single modern terminal that opened in 2013, replacing the older facility. The terminal is a two-level structure:

  • Ground floor: Arrivals hall, immigration, baggage claim, customs, car rental desks, SIM card kiosks, and the taxi dispatch area
  • Upper floor: Departures, check-in counters, security screening, duty-free shopping, food outlets, and boarding gates

MRU handles approximately 4 million passengers per year, with peak traffic during the Southern Hemisphere summer (November through March) and European holiday periods (July-August, Christmas, and Easter). The airport is the main gateway for Mauritius's tourism-driven economy, connecting the island to Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and the Indian Ocean region.

Getting In and Out

MRU is located in the southeast corner of Mauritius, away from most tourist destinations. Travel times depend heavily on destination and traffic.

Typical travel times:

Destination Distance Time (no traffic) Time (peak hours)
Mahebourg (nearest town) 8 km 10-15 min 15-20 min
Port Louis (capital) 48 km 45-60 min 75-90 min
Grand Baie (north coast resorts) 75 km 60-75 min 90-120 min
Flic en Flac (west coast) 55 km 50-65 min 75-100 min
Belle Mare (east coast) 40 km 35-45 min 50-70 min
Le Morne (southwest coast) 45 km 40-50 min 55-70 min

Traffic warning: The M1 motorway connecting the airport to Port Louis and the northern coast gets congested during weekday rush hours (07:30-09:30 and 16:00-18:30). Friday evenings are particularly bad.

Transport options are taxis, hotel transfers, and car rental. There is no rail service and limited public bus options.

Taxi & Rideshare

Taxis

Uber and Bolt are not available in Mauritius. Taxis are the primary transport from MRU.

Official airport taxis operate from the designated taxi rank outside the arrivals hall. Fares are government-regulated with fixed rates based on destination zones, displayed on a board at the taxi counter.

Destination Fixed Fare Time
Mahebourg MUR 700 (USD 15) 10-15 min
Blue Bay MUR 600 (USD 13) 10 min
Port Louis MUR 2,200 (USD 48) 45-60 min
Grand Baie MUR 2,800 (USD 61) 60-75 min
Flic en Flac MUR 2,400 (USD 52) 50-65 min
Belle Mare / Trou d'Eau Douce MUR 1,800 (USD 39) 35-45 min
Le Morne MUR 2,000 (USD 44) 40-50 min

Notes:

  • Pay at the taxi counter inside the arrivals hall before exiting. You receive a voucher
  • Fares are per vehicle, not per person (up to 4 passengers)
  • Taxis accept MUR cash. Some drivers accept euros or USD at unfavorable rates
  • Nighttime surcharges may apply between 23:00 and 06:00
  • Taxis from the airport are more expensive than hailing a taxi in town for the return trip

Hotel Transfers

Most resorts and mid-range hotels offer private airport transfers, often included in package deals. Prices range from MUR 1,500-3,500 (USD 33-76) each way depending on distance. Pre-booking is recommended, as drivers meet you at arrivals with a name board.

For luxury resorts on the west and north coasts, helicopter transfers are available through Air Mauritius Helicopters, starting at MUR 40,000 (USD 870) per flight for up to 5 passengers.

Car Rental

Car rental desks are located in the arrivals hall. Major operators include:

  • Avis
  • Hertz
  • Europcar
  • Sixt
  • Local operators (often cheaper): ABC Car Rental, Pingouin Car Rental

Rates start at MUR 1,500-2,500 (USD 33-54) per day for a compact car. Mauritius drives on the left (British-style). Roads are generally well-maintained but narrow outside the motorway, and signage can be inconsistent. An international driving permit is recommended.

Public Transit

Public bus service from MRU is limited and not practical for most travelers, especially those with luggage or arriving late.

The national bus network operated by several companies (National Transport Corporation, Rose Hill Transport, Mauritius Bus Transport) runs routes from the airport area, but service is infrequent, indirect, and stops early in the evening.

  • Route: Buses pass near the airport on the main road (a 10-minute walk from the terminal) heading to Mahebourg and then connecting to other towns
  • Frequency: Every 20-40 minutes during daytime hours
  • Hours: Roughly 06:00-18:30 (limited service after that)
  • Fare: MUR 30-60 (USD 0.65-1.30) depending on distance
  • Luggage: Buses have no dedicated luggage storage and are often crowded

Metro Express: Mauritius has a light rail system connecting Port Louis to Curepipe, but it does not extend to the airport. There are no current plans for an airport rail link.

For budget travelers, the most practical approach is to take a taxi to Mahebourg (MUR 700) and then use buses from there for onward travel.

Parking

The airport has a multi-story parking structure directly opposite the terminal building.

Parking Type Rate
First hour MUR 100 (USD 2.20)
1-3 hours MUR 200 (USD 4.35)
3-6 hours MUR 400 (USD 8.70)
6-12 hours MUR 600 (USD 13)
12-24 hours MUR 800 (USD 17)
Each additional day MUR 800 (USD 17)

Notes:

  • The parking building is a short covered walk from the terminal entrance
  • Payment is in MUR cash or local debit cards at the exit barrier
  • The car park is monitored by CCTV but has no valet service
  • For stays longer than a week, consider leaving your car at your accommodation and taking a taxi to the airport

Food

Dining options at MRU are limited compared to larger international airports. Most restaurants are airside (after security) in the departures area.

Airside (Departures)

  • Food court area: Several counters serving local Mauritian dishes (curry, rougaille, fried noodles), sandwiches, and fast food. Main meals MUR 400-800 (USD 9-17)
  • Cafe Java: Coffee, pastries, and light meals
  • Bar area: Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, basic snacks
  • Duty-free sampling: Rum tasting at duty-free shops (Chamarel, New Grove, and other Mauritian rums)

Landside (Arrivals/Departures Hall)

  • Small cafe/snack bar: Coffee, cold drinks, and packaged snacks in the arrivals hall
  • Options are minimal on the landside; eat before clearing security or after arriving

Dietary Notes

  • Mauritius has a diverse food culture (Indian, Chinese, Creole, French influences), and airport options reflect this with vegetarian-friendly dishes available
  • Halal options are available at the food court
  • Gluten-free and vegan options are limited; bring your own snacks for dietary restrictions

Tip: Airport food prices are roughly double what you would pay in town. If departing, eat at a restaurant in Mahebourg before heading to the airport.

WiFi

Free WiFi is available throughout the terminal.

Detail Information
Network name MRU Free WiFi
Registration Email address or social media login
Time limit 2 hours (re-register for additional time)
Speed Adequate for browsing and messaging; inconsistent for video streaming

Tips:

  • Connection can be slow during peak departure times (evening European flights)
  • For reliable internet, use a local SIM card with mobile data
  • Some lounges offer faster WiFi

Local SIM

SIM cards are available in the arrivals hall, and purchasing one at the airport is straightforward.

Airport Locations

  • Emtel kiosk (arrivals hall): One of Mauritius's two main carriers
  • my.t (Mauritius Telecom) kiosk (arrivals hall): The largest network with best island-wide coverage

Pricing

Provider Tourist Package Data Validity Price
my.t Visitor SIM 10 GB 30 days MUR 500 (USD 11)
my.t Visitor SIM+ 25 GB 30 days MUR 1,000 (USD 22)
Emtel Tourist Pack 10 GB 15 days MUR 500 (USD 11)
Emtel Tourist Pack+ 20 GB 30 days MUR 900 (USD 20)

Recommendations:

  • my.t has the best overall coverage across the island, including remote beaches and mountain areas
  • Emtel offers competitive pricing and good coverage in tourist areas
  • Bring your passport for SIM registration (required by law)
  • Staff will activate the SIM, configure your phone, and test connectivity before you leave
  • eSIM options: Check with Airalo or Holafly for Mauritius eSIMs if your phone supports them. This avoids the queue at the airport

Cash & ATMs

ATMs are located in the arrivals hall (before and after customs) and in the departures area.

Currency

  • Mauritius: Mauritian Rupee (MUR)
  • Exchange rate: Approximately 1 USD = 46 MUR, 1 EUR = 50 MUR

ATM Locations

  • MCB (Mauritius Commercial Bank): Arrivals hall, widely compatible with international cards
  • SBM (State Bank of Mauritius): Arrivals hall
  • Additional ATMs: Departures level near check-in

ATM Tips

  • Withdrawal limits: Most ATMs allow MUR 10,000-20,000 (USD 215-435) per transaction
  • Fees: Local ATMs may charge MUR 200-400 (USD 4-9) per withdrawal for foreign cards. Check with your bank about international ATM fees
  • Cards accepted: Visa and Mastercard widely accepted. Amex has limited acceptance

Currency Exchange

Exchange counters are located in arrivals and departures. Airport rates carry a 3-7% markup compared to banks in town.

Better alternatives:

  • Use a no-fee travel card (Wise, Revolut) for ATM withdrawals and card payments
  • Exchange money at banks in Port Louis or Grand Baie for better rates
  • Many hotels, restaurants, and tour operators accept euros directly (sometimes at a reasonable rate)

Tip: Mauritius is increasingly card-friendly at hotels, restaurants, and shops. Street vendors, markets, and small local eateries are cash-only. Carry MUR 2,000-5,000 (USD 44-109) in cash for incidentals.

Shopping

The main shopping area is airside in the departures hall after security.

Duty-Free

The airport duty-free zone is operated by Mauritius Duty Free Paradise (MDFP) and includes:

  • Alcohol: Mauritian rum is the standout purchase. Chamarel, New Grove, St Aubin, and Labourdonnais are premium local brands. Prices start at MUR 500 (USD 11) for standard bottles
  • Tobacco: International and local brands
  • Perfume and cosmetics: International brands (Chanel, Dior, Lancome)
  • Electronics: Limited selection

Local Products & Souvenirs

  • Mauritian rum: The island's signature product. Chamarel is widely considered the best
  • Bois Cheri tea: Locally grown tea from Mauritius's tea plantations
  • Vanilla: Bourbon vanilla from the region
  • Model ships: Hand-crafted replica sailing ships (a Mauritian specialty, though fragile for travel)
  • Textiles: Locally made clothing and fabrics
  • Spices: Curry blends, saffron, and other spices

Shopping Tips

  • Duty-free prices on rum are lower than in-town retail shops
  • Model ships can be purchased cheaper at workshops in Curepipe or Floreal, but airport shops offer convenience
  • Shopping options are limited in the arrivals area

Lounges

Lounge options at MRU are limited, reflecting the airport's size.

Airline Lounges

Air Mauritius Amédée Maingard Lounge (Departures, airside):

  • Access: Air Mauritius Business Class, Star Alliance Gold, eligible partner airline status
  • Hours: Opens based on flight schedule, typically 2-3 hours before departures
  • Amenities: Hot and cold buffet, alcoholic drinks (including Mauritian rum), WiFi, showers, comfortable seating with runway views
  • Quality: The best lounge at MRU. Food includes local Mauritian dishes alongside international options

Independent Lounges

Salon Paille-en-Queue Lounge (Departures, airside):

  • Access: Priority Pass, Dragon Pass, LoungeKey, day pass (approximately USD 45)
  • Hours: Based on flight schedule
  • Amenities: Light snacks, drinks, WiFi, seating area
  • Quality: Basic but a comfortable retreat from the main departure hall. Can get crowded when multiple flights depart within the same window

Lounge Tips

  • Priority Pass holders have only one lounge option, and it fills up during evening departure peaks (when European-bound flights cluster between 20:00-23:00)
  • If your airline offers lounge access through a partner, the Air Mauritius lounge is the better choice
  • For long waits without lounge access, the departures area has adequate seating but limited quiet spaces

Accommodation

Hotels near MRU are concentrated in nearby Mahebourg (10-15 minutes) and Blue Bay (10 minutes). Most international visitors head directly to resort areas on the north or west coast, but staying near the airport makes sense for early departures or late arrivals.

The closest accommodation is in Mahebourg, a charming coastal town with a waterfront promenade, local restaurants, and a Monday market. Budget guesthouses start at MUR 2,000 (USD 44) per night, while mid-range hotels range from MUR 4,000-8,000 (USD 87-174) per night.

There is no hotel directly at the airport or within walking distance of the terminal.
