Introduction

Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) is northern Thailand's main airport and the country's fourth-busiest, handling over 10 million passengers annually. Located just 3 km southwest of Chiang Mai's Old City, it is one of the most conveniently situated airports in Southeast Asia — a taxi to the city center takes under 15 minutes.

The airport operates from a single terminal building with two levels:

  • Ground Floor: Arrivals hall, baggage claim, transport desks, SIM card counters
  • Upper Floor: Departures, check-in counters, domestic and international gates

The terminal is split into domestic and international zones:

  • Domestic gates: Serving Bangkok (BKK and DMK), Phuket, Ko Samui, and other Thai cities
  • International gates: Serving destinations in China, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Laos, and Myanmar

Key airlines at CNX:

The terminal is compact — walking from check-in to the farthest gate takes 10-15 minutes.

Getting In and Out

Chiang Mai Airport is located just 3 km southwest of the Old City, making it one of the most city-center-accessible airports in Thailand.

Typical travel times:

Nimmanhaemin Road 10-15 min Trendy cafe/shopping district
Night Bazaar area 10-15 min East side of Old City

Traffic congestion is generally mild compared to Bangkok, though the Superhighway ring road and Old City gates can slow down during rush hours (07:30-09:00 and 16:30-18:30).

  • Credit cards are not accepted; have Thai Baht ready
  • Taxis seat up to 4 passengers for the same fare

Songthaew (Red Trucks)

Chiang Mai's iconic red pickup trucks (songthaew) are the cheapest option:

  • Shared songthaew: ฿40-60 per person to Old City areas
  • Available: Outside the arrivals hall, turn left
  • How it works: Shared ride; the driver collects passengers heading in the same direction
  • Negotiate: Confirm the price before boarding

Public Transit

Chiang Mai does not have a metro or rail transit system. The main public transport options are:

Songthaew (Shared Red Trucks)

  • Fixed routes around the city for ฿20-40 per person
  • Flag them down on the road and tell the driver your destination
  • Most useful for travel within the Old City and Nimmanhaemin area

  • Fare: ฿20 (US$0.60)
  • Frequency: Every 20-30 minutes
  • Hours: 06:00-23:00

Motorbike/Car Rental

Food

CNX has limited dining compared to Bangkok's airports, but several options are available.

  • International departures: Cafe Amazon, duty-free snack shops, a small restaurant

  • Departures hall: Coffee shops, bakeries

Best value: The food court in the domestic departures area offers basic Thai dishes (pad thai, fried rice, noodle soup) at reasonable prices.

Pro tip: Given the airport's proximity to the city, eat before heading to the airport. Chiang Mai has outstanding street food and restaurants just minutes away.

  • Krungthai Bank (light blue)

Important: Thai ATMs charge ฿220 (~US$6) per foreign card withdrawal, in addition to any fees from your home bank.

  • Exchange booths in the arrivals hall (rates are 2-5% worse than city rates)
  • SuperRich outlets in the city (Tha Phae Gate area) offer better rates
  • Withdraw from ATMs using a no-foreign-fee debit card for the best value

Thailand uses the Thai Baht (THB/฿). Approximate rate: US$1 = ฿35.

Cash tips: Chiang Mai is more cash-dependent than Bangkok. Markets, street food, songthaews, and many smaller restaurants accept cash only. Carry ฿1,000-2,000 for immediate needs.

Shopping

CNX has basic shopping options, primarily in the international departures area.

Duty-Free (International Departures):

Accommodation

Hotels near CNX are plentiful thanks to the airport's central location — most city hotels are within 15 minutes.

Near the Airport:

  • Hotels along the airport road and in the Hang Dong area (5-10 minutes drive)
  • Budget guesthouses in the Old City are also within easy reach (10-15 minutes)

For early flights: Given the very short transfer time to the airport, staying in the Old City or Nimmanhaemin is perfectly practical even for early morning departures.

Destination Tips

Chiang Mai is Thailand's cultural capital and the gateway to the mountainous north. The city blends ancient temples, vibrant markets, outstanding food, and easy access to nature.

Key Areas

Area From Airport Best For
Old City (within the moat) 10-15 min Temples, history, guesthouses
Nimmanhaemin Road 10-15 min Cafes, boutiques, nightlife
Night Bazaar 10-15 min Shopping, street food
Riverside 15-20 min Restaurants, bars
Doi Suthep 30-40 min Mountain temple, views

Must-See Attractions

  • Wat Phra That Doi Suthep: Hilltop temple with panoramic city views, 15 km west of the city. Take a songthaew from the Old City (฿60-80 per person shared, 30 min)
  • Wat Chedi Luang: 14th-century temple in the heart of the Old City with a massive ruined chedi
  • Wat Phra Singh: Chiang Mai's most revered temple, stunning Lanna architecture
  • Sunday Walking Street: Ratchadamnoen Road transforms into a massive market every Sunday evening (16:00-22:00) — crafts, street food, live music
  • Saturday Night Market: Wua Lai Road, south of the Old City (16:00-22:00)
  • Warorot Market (Kad Luang): Chiang Mai's largest traditional market — food, flowers, textiles

Northern Thai Food

Chiang Mai has its own distinct cuisine (Lanna food), different from central Thai cooking:

Dish Description Where to Find
Khao Soi Coconut curry noodle soup with crispy noodles Khao Soi Khun Yai, Khao Soi Mae Sai
Sai Oua Northern Thai spicy sausage Warorot Market, night markets
Nam Prik Ong Chili dip with minced pork and tomatoes Local restaurants
Kanom Jeen Nam Ngiao Rice noodles in spicy tomato broth Morning markets
Sticky Rice Served with most northern dishes Everywhere

Khao soi is Chiang Mai's signature dish — a rich coconut curry soup over egg noodles topped with crispy fried noodles. Do not leave without trying it.

Day Trips

  • Doi Inthanon National Park: Thailand's highest peak, waterfalls, hill tribe villages (2 hours southwest)
  • Elephant Nature Park: Ethical elephant sanctuary (1 hour north)
  • Chiang Rai & White Temple: Stunning contemporary temple, 3 hours north
  • Pai: Mountain town popular with backpackers, 3 hours northwest (winding road)
  • Mae Hong Son: Remote mountain province, loop drive through stunning scenery

Practical Tips

  • Best season: November-February (cool, dry, comfortable). March-April is smoky season (agricultural burning) with poor air quality. June-October is rainy but green.
  • Temples: Cover shoulders and knees; remove shoes before entering
  • Scooter rental: ฿200-300/day, widely available. Drive carefully — mountain roads are steep and winding
  • Cooking classes: Chiang Mai is famous for Thai cooking courses (฿800-1,500 for a half-day)
  • Night markets: Open daily; the Sunday Walking Street is the best

Layover Recommendations

  • 4-hour layover: Quick taxi to the Old City — visit Wat Phra Singh or Wat Chedi Luang, grab a bowl of khao soi
  • 6-hour layover: Add the Sunday Walking Street (if timing works) or explore Nimmanhaemin for cafes and shopping
  • 8+ hour layover: Drive up to Doi Suthep for temple views, explore the Old City, and eat your way through Warorot Market
