Turkmenistan

Visa AND Letter of Invitation required for most nationalities

Overview

Turkmenistan is one of the world's most isolated and least-visited countries, a former Soviet republic in Central Asia bordered by the Caspian Sea, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Iran. The country operates under an authoritarian government with strict controls on tourism, making it one of the most challenging destinations to visit.

The capital, Ashgabat, is famous for its surreal white marble architecture and authoritarian aesthetic—the city holds the Guinness World Record for the highest concentration of white marble buildings. Outside the capital, the country offers unique attractions including the Darvaza Gas Crater (the "Door to Hell"), ancient Silk Road cities, and vast desert landscapes.

For travelers, Turkmenistan requires significant advance planning. Independent travel is essentially impossible—most visitors must join organized tours with licensed guides. Despite the challenges, the country offers an utterly unique travel experience unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Major Airports

International Gateway

Airport Code City Role
Ashgabat International ASB Ashgabat Main international gateway, Turkmenistan Airlines hub

Ashgabat International Airport (ASB) — The country's primary airport and hub for Turkmenistan Airlines. A new terminal opened in 2016, designed in the shape of a falcon. The airport features the characteristic white marble aesthetic found throughout Ashgabat. Immigration and customs can be slow—allow plenty of time for formalities. The airport is located 10 km north of the city center.

Regional Airports

Airport Code City Notes
Turkmenabat CRZ Turkmenabat Eastern Turkmenistan, near Uzbek border
Mary MYP Mary Near ancient Merv ruins
Dashoguz TAZ Dashoguz Northern region, near Urgench (Uzbekistan)
Turkmenbashi KRW Turkmenbashi Caspian Sea coast

Regional airports primarily serve domestic routes. International connections beyond Ashgabat are extremely limited.

Airlines

National Carrier

Turkmenistan Airlines (T5) — The state-owned flag carrier and only airline based in the country. Operates from ASB to limited international destinations including:

  • CIS/Regional: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Minsk, Kazan, Almaty, Tashkent
  • Asia: Beijing, Bangkok, Delhi, Amritsar
  • Middle East: Dubai, Abu Dhabi
  • Europe: Frankfurt, London (limited frequency)

The airline operates a small fleet of Boeing 737s and 777s. Service is basic by international standards. Flight frequencies are limited—most routes operate once or twice weekly.

Important: Turkmenistan Airlines was banned from EU airspace from 2019-2023 due to safety concerns. Check current status before booking connections through European airports.

International Airlines

Very few foreign carriers serve Turkmenistan:

  • Turkish Airlines (TK) — Istanbul to Ashgabat (when operating)
  • Belavia (B2) — Minsk to Ashgabat
  • flydubai (FZ) — Dubai to Ashgabat (seasonal)
  • S7 Airlines (S7) — Moscow to Ashgabat

Flight availability changes frequently based on geopolitical factors. Always verify current schedules before planning travel.

Entry Requirements

Visa Requirements (Very Restrictive)

Turkmenistan has one of the world's most restrictive visa policies:

Required for almost all nationalities:

  • Visa — Must be obtained in advance
  • Letter of Invitation (LOI) — Required before visa application
  • Tour booking — Most visitors must arrange travel through a licensed tour operator

How to Get a Visa

  1. Book a tour with a Turkmenistan-licensed operator
  2. Tour operator applies for your Letter of Invitation (takes 2-3 weeks)
  3. Once LOI approved, apply for visa at Turkmenistan embassy/consulate
  4. Visa processing: Additional 1-2 weeks

Total lead time: 4-8 weeks minimum

Transit Visa

A 5-day transit visa is available for travelers crossing Turkmenistan overland (e.g., between Iran and Uzbekistan). Still requires advance application but simpler than tourist visa.

Visa on Arrival

Technically available at Ashgabat airport but not recommended:

  • Requires pre-approved LOI
  • Expensive ($155+ for most nationalities)
  • High risk of denial
  • Better to obtain visa in advance

Passport Requirements

  • Valid for at least 6 months beyond intended stay
  • At least 2 blank pages
  • Must match exactly with LOI details

Registration

Travelers must register with authorities:

  • Hotels register guests automatically
  • For non-hotel stays, register at local OVIR office within 3 days

Critical: Keep all registration slips—you'll need them to exit the country.

Countries with Easier Access

A few nationalities have simplified procedures:

  • Turkey: Visa-free for up to 30 days
  • Some CIS countries have bilateral agreements

Official information: Contact Turkmenistan embassy in your country

Getting Around

Domestic Flights

Turkmenistan Airlines operates domestic routes between major cities:

Route Frequency Flight Time
Ashgabat → Turkmenabat Several weekly 45 min
Ashgabat → Mary Several weekly 35 min
Ashgabat → Dashoguz Several weekly 1 hour
Ashgabat → Turkmenbashi Several weekly 50 min

Fares are heavily subsidized and very cheap for foreigners (under $20 typically). Book through your tour operator.

Train

Soviet-era rail network connects major cities:

  • Ashgabat → Turkmenabat: Overnight train
  • Ashgabat → Dashoguz: Long journey (12+ hours)
  • Basic but functional. Sleeper compartments available.

Not commonly used by tourists due to time constraints and tour logistics.

Road Transport

Most tour travel is by private vehicle with driver:

  • Roads vary from good (main highways) to poor (rural areas)
  • Long distances—Turkmenistan is larger than California
  • Ashgabat → Darvaza Gas Crater: 260 km, 3-4 hours
  • Ashgabat → Mary: 350 km, 4-5 hours

Independent driving: Not practical for tourists. Checkpoints throughout the country require permits.

Within Ashgabat

  • Taxis: Unmarked but plentiful. Negotiate fare before riding
  • Buses: Exist but not useful for tourists
  • Metro: Ashgabat has no metro (despite persistent rumors of a secret one)

Your tour guide will arrange all transportation within the city.

  • Bring cash: USD in good condition (post-2006, no marks or tears)
  • Exchange: Hotels exchange at official rate. Better rates exist but exercise caution
  • Budget: Tours typically all-inclusive. Budget $100-200/day including tour costs

What to Bring

  • Cash (USD): Enough for entire trip plus emergency
  • Printed documents: Visa, LOI, tour confirmation, hotel bookings
  • Plug adapter: Type C/F (European style)
  • Medication: Bring everything needed—limited pharmacy availability
  • Photos: Passport photos for registration if needed
  • Gifts: Small items to give guides and hosts (appreciated but not expected)

Connectivity
