Thailand
Visa-free for 60 days for most nationalities
Overview
Thailand is Southeast Asia's most visited country and a major aviation hub connecting Asia, Europe, and Oceania. The country offers everything from beach resorts to ancient temples to modern megacity experiences—all at prices that attract millions of travelers annually.
Bangkok has two airports: Suvarnabhumi (BKK), the main international hub, and Don Mueang (DMK), the low-cost carrier base. This dual-airport system confuses many first-time visitors—always confirm which airport your flight uses.
Thai Airways operates from Suvarnabhumi as the flag carrier, but Thailand's aviation story is increasingly about low-cost carriers. Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air have made domestic and regional travel remarkably affordable.
Major Airports
Bangkok's Two Airports
Critical: Bangkok has two major airports that are 35 km apart (1-2 hours by road in traffic). Always verify which airport you're using:
| Airport | Code | Role | Airlines |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suvarnabhumi | BKK | Main international hub | Thai Airways, most full-service carriers |
| Don Mueang | DMK | Low-cost hub | AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air |
Suvarnabhumi (BKK) — Thailand's primary airport, opened 2006. Modern single terminal with two concourses. Thai Airways hub with extensive international connections. Airport Rail Link runs to city center (30 min to Phaya Thai, connecting to BTS Skytrain).
Don Mueang (DMK) — Bangkok's original airport, now dedicated to low-cost carriers. Two terminals: T1 (international LCCs) and T2 (domestic). Connected to city by SRT Red Line commuter rail (30 min to Bang Sue). No direct rail link to BKK—transfer between airports takes 1-2 hours.
Connecting between BKK and DMK: Free shuttle bus operates between airports (allow 2+ hours during traffic). Not recommended for same-day connections with different airlines.
Beach Destinations
| Airport | Code | Destination | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phuket | HKT | Phuket | Thailand's busiest resort airport |
| Samui | USM | Koh Samui | Bangkok Airways monopoly, premium prices |
| Krabi | KBV | Krabi, Ao Nang, Koh Lanta | Southern Andaman coast |
| Surat Thani | URT | Koh Samui, Koh Phangan | Ferry connection required |
| U-Tapao | UTP | Pattaya | Growing LCC alternative |
Phuket (HKT) — Thailand's second-busiest airport with extensive international connections, especially from Europe, Middle East, and Australia. Single international terminal, domestic terminal nearby.
Samui (USM) — Privately owned by Bangkok Airways (built and operated by the airline). Only Bangkok Airways flies here. Beautiful open-air terminal, but flights expensive. Alternative: fly to Surat Thani + ferry.
Northern Thailand
| Airport | Code | City | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chiang Mai | CNX | Chiang Mai | Northern hub, international connections |
| Chiang Rai | CEI | Chiang Rai | Golden Triangle access |
| Mae Hong Son | HGN | Mae Hong Son | Scenic small airport |
Chiang Mai (CNX) — Northern Thailand's main gateway. International flights from regional Asian cities plus domestic connections. Modern terminal, 15 minutes from city center.
Airlines
Flag Carrier
Thai Airways (TG) — Thailand's flag carrier and Star Alliance member. Hub at Suvarnabhumi. Long-haul network to Europe, Australia, Asia, and the US (seasonal). Known for service quality but has faced financial challenges.
Major Low-Cost Carriers
LCCs dominate Thai domestic travel:
- Thai AirAsia (FD) — Largest LCC, Don Mueang base. Extensive domestic and regional network. Part of AirAsia group.
- Thai AirAsia X (XJ) — Long-haul low-cost arm. Don Mueang to Japan, Korea, Australia.
- Thai Lion Air (SL) — Don Mueang base. Indonesian-owned, domestic and regional.
- Thai Vietjet (VZ) — Suvarnabhumi base. Domestic and regional, Vietnamese-owned.
- Nok Air (DD) — Don Mueang hub. Domestic network, Thai-owned.
Full-Service Carriers
- Bangkok Airways (PG) — Boutique carrier based at Suvarnabhumi. Operates Samui airport. Regional network plus domestic. Good service, included bags/meals.
- Thai Smile (WE) — Thai Airways' regional subsidiary. Suvarnabhumi base. Better than LCCs, cheaper than Thai Airways.

Getting Around

Flying is the fastest way to cover Thailand's distances:
| Route | Flight Time | Frequency | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bangkok ↔ Phuket | 1h 20m | 30+/day | Heavy competition, cheap fares |
| Bangkok ↔ Chiang Mai | 1h 15m | 30+/day | Best flight deals in Thailand |
| Bangkok ↔ Samui | 1h 10m | 15+/day | Bangkok Airways only (expensive) |
| Bangkok ↔ Krabi | 1h 25m | 15+/day | Good LCC coverage |
| Chiang Mai ↔ Phuket | 2h 00m | 5+/day | Avoids Bangkok transfer |
Booking tips:
- LCC fares from 500-1,500 THB ($15-45) if booked early
- Thai AirAsia often cheapest
- Bangkok Airways includes bags/meals but costs 2-3x more
- Always check which Bangkok airport (BKK vs DMK)
Trains
Thailand's rail network is slow but scenic:
- Bangkok-Chiang Mai: Overnight sleeper (12-14 hours), day trains available
- Bangkok-Surat Thani: Overnight sleeper for Samui/Phangan ferry connection
- Bangkok-Nong Khai: Northeast route, connects to Laos
Note: No high-speed rail yet (China-Thai project under construction). Trains are comfortable but much slower than flying.
Buses
Extensive long-distance bus network:
- VIP buses: 24 seats, reclines flat, recommended for overnight
- First Class: 32 seats, good comfort
- Government bus terminal in each major city
- Popular routes: Bangkok-Pattaya, Bangkok-Hua Hin, Bangkok-Chiang Mai
Ferries
Essential for island access:

- Songthaews: Shared pickup trucks, local routes
- Tuk-tuks: Negotiate price before boarding, tourist premium

Best Time to Visit
High Season (November-February)
Cool and dry—Thailand's best weather. Peak tourist season with highest prices and crowds. Book flights and hotels well ahead, especially December-January.
Hot Season (March-May)
Hottest months (35-40°C), especially April. Songkran (Thai New Year) in April brings water festivals and domestic travel surge. Good for beaches if you can handle heat.
Rainy Season (June-October)
Monsoon season. Afternoon downpours common but usually brief. Lower prices, fewer tourists. Good for:
- Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai receives less rain)
- Bangkok city exploration
- Diving on Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Phangan—opposite monsoon)
Regional Variations
| Region | Best Time | Rainy Season |
|---|---|---|
| Bangkok/Central | Nov-Feb | May-Oct |
| Phuket/Andaman Coast | Nov-Apr | May-Oct (heavy) |
| Koh Samui/Gulf Coast | Dec-Aug | Sep-Nov (different monsoon) |
| Chiang Mai/North | Nov-Feb | Jun-Oct |
| Isan (Northeast) | Nov-Feb | May-Oct |
Note: Gulf islands (Samui, Phangan, Tao) have opposite weather to Andaman coast—good when Phuket is rainy.
