Portugal

Schengen Area - visa-free for 90 days for many nationalities

Overview

Portugal is a compact Western European country on the Iberian Peninsula, increasingly popular with travelers for its historic cities, Atlantic beaches, wine regions, and the subtropical islands of Madeira and the Azores. Despite its small size, Portugal has a well-developed aviation network anchored by TAP Air Portugal, the national carrier and Star Alliance member.

Lisbon (LIS) serves as the primary international gateway and TAP's hub, with strong connections to Europe, Brazil, Africa, and North America. Porto (OPO) is the second major airport, while Faro (FAO) handles massive seasonal traffic to the Algarve beach resorts. The Atlantic islands of Madeira (FNC) and the Azores (PDL) offer direct European connections, particularly popular with UK and German tourists.

Low-cost carriers dominate Portuguese aviation—Ryanair is now the country's largest airline by passengers, with easyJet also holding significant market share. This means competitive fares and extensive connectivity, particularly to UK and European destinations.

Major Airports

Major Gateways

Airport Code City Role
Lisbon Humberto Delgado LIS Lisbon National hub, TAP base
Francisco Sá Carneiro OPO Porto Northern gateway, secondary hub
Faro FAO Faro Algarve beach resort gateway
Cristiano Ronaldo FNC Funchal, Madeira Atlantic island hub
João Paulo II PDL Ponta Delgada, Azores Azores main gateway

Lisbon (LIS) — Portugal's largest and busiest airport, located 7km from the city center. Two terminals: T1 handles most traffic including TAP and Star Alliance partners, while T2 serves some low-cost carriers. Metro (Red Line) connects to city center in 20-25 minutes. Major hub for routes to Brazil and Portuguese-speaking Africa.

Porto (OPO) — Northern Portugal's gateway, 11km from the city center. Single modern terminal. Metro connection to central Porto (30-40 min). Strong low-cost presence with Ryanair and easyJet, plus TAP domestic and European routes.

Faro (FAO) — Algarve's main airport, essential for beach tourism. Extremely seasonal—packed in summer, quiet in winter. No rail connection; buses and taxis to resort towns (Lagos, Albufeira, Vilamoura 30-60 min).

Atlantic Islands

Airport Code Island Notes
Madeira (Cristiano Ronaldo) FNC Madeira Challenging runway, stunning approach
Porto Santo PXO Porto Santo Small island near Madeira
Ponta Delgada PDL São Miguel (Azores) Main Azores hub
Horta HOR Faial (Azores) Inter-island connections
Lajes TER Terceira (Azores) Historic transatlantic stopover
Santa Maria SMA Santa Maria (Azores) Smallest Azores airport

Madeira (FNC) is famous for its challenging runway extended over the sea on pillars. Crosswinds can cause diversions or go-arounds. The airport was renamed after footballer Cristiano Ronaldo in 2017.

The Azores archipelago has airports on multiple islands. PDL (São Miguel) is the main gateway with international flights; other islands are reached via SATA Air Açores connections.

Regional Airports

Airport Code Location Notes
Beja BYJ Alentejo Limited commercial service

Portugal's mainland is compact enough that most regional travel is better served by road or rail than domestic flights.

Getting Around

Domestic Flights

Portugal is small—most destinations are better reached by train or car:

Route Flight Train Recommendation
Lisbon ↔ Porto 1h + airport time 2h 40m (Alfa Pendular) Train preferred
Lisbon ↔ Faro 45m + airport 3h (bus/car) Either works
Lisbon ↔ Madeira 1h 35m Flight only
Lisbon ↔ Azores 2h 15m Flight only

For islands: Flights are the only option:

  • Lisbon/Porto to Madeira: 1h 30-40m
  • Lisbon to Ponta Delgada (Azores): 2h 15m
  • Inter-island Azores flights: 30-45m

Trains

Portugal has a decent rail network, though not high-speed:

  • Alfa Pendular: Fastest trains, Lisbon-Porto in 2h 40m
  • Intercidades: Standard express service
  • Regional: Local stopping trains

Booking:

  • cp.pt — Portuguese rail operator
  • Book Alfa Pendular in advance for best prices

  • Parking difficult in Lisbon and Porto historic centers

Buses

Rede Expressos and FlixBus operate intercity routes:
