Overview
Paraguay is a landlocked country in central South America, bordered by Argentina, Brazil, and Bolivia. With a population of around 7 million, it remains one of the continent's least-visited countries, offering an authentic South American experience away from tourist crowds.
The country has limited aviation infrastructure, with Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU) in Asuncion serving as the sole international gateway. Paraguay has no current national flag carrier, with regional airlines and international carriers providing connections to neighboring countries and beyond. Most international visitors arrive via connections through Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Lima, or Panama City.
Paraguay is known for its Guarani indigenous culture, Jesuit mission ruins (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and the vast Chaco wilderness. The country operates as a major trading hub, particularly in Ciudad del Este near the Brazilian border.
Major Airports
International Gateway
| Airport | City | Role | Major Airlines |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASU | Asuncion | International gateway | LATAM, Amaszonas, Copa, Avianca |
Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU) is Paraguay's only international airport, located 15 km northeast of central Asuncion in the suburb of Luque. The airport has a single terminal handling both domestic and international flights, with capacity for approximately 1.5 million passengers annually.
Facilities include duty-free shops, car rental counters, currency exchange, and ATMs. The airport underwent renovations in recent years to improve passenger facilities.
Other Airports
Guarani International Airport (AGT) in Ciudad del Este near the Brazilian border has limited scheduled service, primarily serving as an alternative entry point with occasional charter and cargo operations.
Several smaller airstrips serve the remote Chaco region for domestic travel, but commercial passenger services are minimal.
Airlines
Operating Airlines
Paraguay currently has no national flag carrier. The country's aviation market is served primarily by regional and international carriers:
Regional carriers operating from ASU:
- Amaszonas Paraguay — Bolivian-owned airline offering regional connections to Bolivia, Argentina, and Brazil

International carriers serving ASU:
- LATAM Airlines — Connections via Lima and Sao Paulo

Historical Context
Paraguay's former flag carrier, LAP - Lineas Aereas Paraguayas, ceased operations in 1994. TAM Mercosur, which later became LATAM Paraguay, suspended operations in 2020. Currently, no Paraguayan-owned airline operates as a full-service carrier on international routes.
