Moldova

Visa-free for 90 days for EU, US, UK, and most Western nationalities

Overview

Moldova is a small landlocked country in Eastern Europe, nestled between Romania and Ukraine. One of Europe's least-visited nations, it offers travelers an authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience with world-renowned wine culture, ancient monasteries, and Soviet-era heritage. Chisinau International Airport (KIV) is the country's sole international gateway and handles virtually all commercial air traffic.

For international travelers, Moldova is most easily reached via connections through major European hubs—particularly Istanbul, Frankfurt, Vienna, and Bucharest. The country's compact size means all destinations are within a few hours' drive from Chisinau. Moldova has become increasingly popular for wine tourism, with its extensive underground cellars at Cricova and Milestii Mici ranking among the world's largest.

A unique aspect of Moldova is Transnistria, an unrecognized breakaway region along the Ukrainian border. Despite its unusual political status, it is accessible to tourists and offers a glimpse of preserved Soviet atmosphere with its own currency, flag, and border controls.

Chisinau International Airport (KIV)

Chisinau International Airport is Moldova's main and only significant airport, located 13 km south of the capital city center. Named after the capital city, it serves as the hub for Air Moldova and FlyOne, handling approximately 3 million passengers annually.

The airport has a modern terminal renovated in recent years with improved facilities. Key features:

  • Direct connections to major European cities including Istanbul, Frankfurt, Vienna, London, and Rome
  • Strong links to destinations with Moldovan diaspora communities (Italy, Germany, UK, Israel, Russia)
  • Connected to city center by bus (lines 30, 165; 30-40 minutes), taxi (approximately 100-150 MDL), or ride-hailing apps
  • Free WiFi throughout the terminal

Note: There is also a small airport at Balti (BZY) in northern Moldova, but it has extremely limited commercial service and is rarely used by international travelers.

Getting Around

Domestic Flights

Moldova has no domestic flight network given its small size. All destinations are reachable by road within 3-4 hours from Chisinau.

Trains

Moldova's rail network is limited but functional:

  • Chisinau ↔ Ungheni (Romanian border): 2 hours
  • Chisinau ↔ Balti: 3 hours
  • Chisinau ↔ Bender: 1.5 hours

Trains are inexpensive but slow and infrequent. International trains connect to Bucharest, Odessa, and Moscow (when operational).

Booking: Tickets available at railway stations or through CFM (Moldovan Railways).

Car Rental

Available at Chisinau Airport and in the city. Notes:

  • Road conditions vary—main routes are reasonable, rural roads can be poor
  • Right-hand traffic
  • International license accepted alongside your national license
  • Fuel stations available throughout the country
  • Driving to Transnistria is permitted but inform your rental company

Buses and Minibuses (Marshrutkas)

The most practical way to get around Moldova:

  • Marshrutkas (minibuses) connect Chisinau to all major towns
  • Frequent departures from Chisinau's central bus station
  • Very affordable (typically 30-80 MDL for most destinations)
  • International buses to Bucharest (8 hours), Kyiv, and other regional cities

For Transnistria, buses run regularly from Chisinau to Tiraspol (1.5-2 hours).

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Uber operates in Chisinau alongside local apps like Yandex and local taxi services. Always confirm the price before departure or use app-based services.
