Estonia
Schengen area - visa-free for EU/EEA citizens
Overview
Estonia is a small Baltic nation on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea, known as one of the world's most digitally advanced countries. The country pioneered e-government, e-residency, and has the highest startup density per capita in Europe. Tallinn Lennart Meri Airport (TLL) serves as the country's sole international gateway.
With a population of just 1.3 million, Estonia offers a compact but well-connected aviation landscape. Tallinn provides direct flights to major European hubs and serves as an efficient entry point for exploring the Baltic region. The country no longer has a flag carrier since Estonian Air ceased operations in 2015.
As an EU member since 2004 and Eurozone member since 2011, Estonia offers seamless travel integration with Europe while providing access to a unique blend of medieval history, innovative tech culture, and pristine Baltic nature.
Major Airports
International Gateway
| Airport | City | Role | Major Airlines |
|---|---|---|---|
| TLL | Tallinn | Main international airport | airBaltic, Finnair, LOT, Ryanair |
Tallinn Lennart Meri Airport (TLL)
Estonia's only commercial airport and the country's main aviation hub:
- Terminals: Single terminal with landside and airside areas
- Location: 4 km southeast of Tallinn city center
- Transport: Tram Line 4 to city center (20 min), bus, taxi
- Minimum connection: 35-45 min
- Annual passengers: Approximately 3 million
Tallinn Airport is compact and efficient, consistently ranked among Europe's best airports for passenger experience. The terminal underwent extensive modernization and offers modern facilities despite its smaller size. Direct connections to most major European capitals and hub airports.
Regional Airports
Estonia has several smaller regional airports, though commercial service is limited:
- Tartu (TAY): Estonia's second city, limited flights to Helsinki
- Kuressaare (URE): Saaremaa island, seasonal service
- Kardla (KDL): Hiiumaa island, seasonal service
- Parnu (EPU): Summer resort town, limited service
Most international travelers use Tallinn exclusively, with regional airports primarily serving domestic and charter operations.
Airlines
No Flag Carrier
Estonia does not currently have a national flag carrier. Estonian Air operated from 1991 until its liquidation in November 2015 due to financial difficulties and EU state aid restrictions. The airline was never replaced, leaving Estonia as one of few EU countries without a flag carrier.
Major Airlines Serving Estonia
- airBaltic (BT) — Latvian carrier, significant Estonian presence, many European routes via Riga hub
- Finnair (AY) — Finnish flag carrier, Helsinki connections, oneworld alliance
- LOT Polish Airlines (LO) — Warsaw hub connections, Star Alliance
- Ryanair (FR) — Low-cost carrier, European leisure routes
- Wizz Air (W6) — Ultra-low-cost, growing European network
- Norwegian (DY) — Nordic routes (seasonal)
- Lufthansa (LH) — Frankfurt connections
- SAS (SK) — Stockholm and Copenhagen connections
Domestic Flights
Limited domestic service due to Estonia's small size (45,000 km2):
- Tallinn-Tartu services suspended/minimal
- Regional island airports served by small operators
- Most domestic travel done by car or bus (2-3 hours covers most destinations)
Entry Requirements

- Processing: 15 calendar days typical
Passport Requirements
- Valid for at least 3 months beyond intended stay
- Issued within the last 10 years
