Chile

Visa-free for US, EU, UK, Canada, Australia up to 90 days

Overview

Chile is one of the world's most geographically unique countries, stretching over 4,300 kilometers from the Atacama Desert in the north to Patagonia in the south, yet averaging only 177 kilometers wide. This extreme length makes domestic flying essential—a drive from Arica to Punta Arenas would take several days, while flights connect these extremes in under 5 hours.

Santiago Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport (SCL) serves as Chile's primary gateway, handling over 90% of international arrivals and serving as the hub for LATAM Chile, the country's dominant carrier. The domestic aviation market is well-served by LATAM Chile along with low-cost carriers Sky Airline and JetSMART, which have significantly expanded route options and lowered fares in recent years.

Chile's diverse geography draws visitors seeking Atacama stargazing, Patagonian trekking, wine country tours, and Easter Island exploration. The country's long, narrow shape spans multiple climate zones and nearly five hours of flight time from north to south.

Primary Hub

Santiago (SCL) — Chile's only major international airport and LATAM Chile's hub. Located 15km northwest of central Santiago in Pudahuel. New terminal opened 2022, significantly improving capacity and passenger experience. Handles nearly all international flights to Chile plus domestic connections nationwide. Connected to city center by metro extension, buses, and taxis.

Key Regional Airports

Calama (CJC) — Gateway to San Pedro de Atacama and the Atacama Desert. Located 100km from San Pedro (1.5 hour transfer). Essential for visiting the world's driest desert, Valle de la Luna, El Tatio geysers, and astronomical observatories.

Punta Arenas (PUQ) — Southern Patagonia's main airport, gateway to Torres del Paine National Park and embarkation point for Antarctic cruises. Located on the Strait of Magellan at the southern tip of mainland South America.

Puerto Montt (PMC) — Gateway to Chile's Lake District and starting point for Carretera Austral road trip or ferry journeys through Patagonian fjords. Access point for Chiloe Island and northern Patagonia.

Easter Island (IPC) — One of the world's most remote airports, located 3,700km off the Chilean coast. Served only by LATAM from Santiago (5+ hour flight). Limited flight frequency—typically one flight daily.

Airlines

Flag Carrier

LATAM Chile (LA) — Chile's dominant carrier and part of the LATAM Airlines Group, South America's largest airline. Member of oneworld alliance. Hub at SCL with extensive domestic network covering all major Chilean cities. International routes to North America (Miami, New York, Los Angeles), Europe (Madrid, Paris, Frankfurt), Australia (Sydney, Auckland), and throughout South America.

Low-Cost Carriers

Chile's domestic market has been transformed by two aggressive LCCs:

  • Sky Airline (H2) — Chilean low-cost carrier based in Santiago. Operates extensive domestic network plus international routes to Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Uruguay. Known for competitive fares and unbundled pricing
  • JetSMART (JA) — Ultra-low-cost carrier launched 2017, modeled on Spirit/Frontier. Aggressive domestic expansion with fares often 50% below legacy carriers. Growing international network to Argentina, Peru, Colombia, and Brazil

International Service

Major foreign carriers serving Chile:

  • North America: American (Miami, Dallas), Delta (Atlanta), United (Houston)
  • European: Iberia (Madrid), Air France (Paris), British Airways (London—seasonal)
  • South American: Aerolinas Argentinas, Avianca, Copa, LATAM (Peru, Ecuador, Colombia)
  • Other: Qantas (Sydney), Air New Zealand (Auckland)

Most international flights connect through SCL. Limited international service operates from regional airports.

Getting Around

Domestic Flights

Flying is the only practical way to cover Chile's vast north-south distance:

Route Flight Time Daily Flights
SCL ↔ PUQ (Punta Arenas) 3.5 hours 6-8
SCL ↔ IQQ (Iquique) 2.5 hours 5-6
SCL ↔ CJC (Calama/Atacama) 2 hours 8-10
SCL ↔ PMC (Puerto Montt) 1.5 hours 10+
SCL ↔ IPC (Easter Island) 5.5 hours 1-2

Booking tips:

  • JetSMART and Sky often 30-50% cheaper than LATAM
  • Book Atacama and Patagonia flights early during peak season
  • Easter Island flights book up quickly—reserve well in advance
  • LCCs charge extra for baggage—read fare rules carefully
  • LATAM offers more schedule flexibility and included baggage

Buses

Chile has excellent long-distance bus service:

  • Semi-cama: Semi-reclining seats, standard service
  • Salon-cama: Full reclining seats, wider spacing
  • Premium/Suite: Fully flat beds, meals included

Major operators include Pullman Bus, Tur-Bus, and Cruz del Sur. Overnight buses are comfortable alternatives for medium distances (Santiago-Puerto Montt: 12 hours, Santiago-La Serena: 6 hours).

For north-south travel exceeding 8-10 hours, flying is significantly faster.

Car Rental

Useful for:

  • Carretera Austral (Patagonian highway)—Chile's most scenic drive
  • Wine regions (Maipo, Colchagua, Casablanca valleys)
  • Lake District exploration
  • Atacama Desert day trips from San Pedro

Notes:

  • International license not legally required but recommended
  • Drive on the right
  • Ruta 5 (Pan-American Highway) connects north to south
  • Toll roads (autopistas) around Santiago require electronic tag (TeleVia/TAG)
  • Mountain passes may close in winter—check conditions
  • Carretera Austral partially unpaved—4WD recommended

Ferries

Essential in southern Chile where roads end:

  • Navimag: Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales (4 days through fjords)—a journey, not just transport
  • Naviera Austral: Connects towns along Carretera Austral
  • Chiloe ferries: Regular service to Chiloe Island from mainland

Travel Tips

Money

  • Currency: Chilean Peso (CLP), symbol $
  • Cards: Widely accepted in cities; cash essential in rural areas and small towns
  • ATMs: Widely available—Banco Estado and Santander common
  • Exchange: Better rates at exchange houses (casas de cambio) than airport or banks
  • Tipping: 10% at restaurants (often suggested on card machines); round up for taxis
  • Note: Prices sometimes quoted in UF (Unidad de Fomento), an inflation-adjusted unit

Electrical

  • Voltage: 220 V / 50 Hz
  • Plug types: Type C (Europlug) and Type L (Italian-style, three round pins in line)
  • Adapters: US/UK travelers need adapters; European Type C often works
  • Note: Chile's Type L outlets accept Europlug (Type C) devices but not grounded European (Type F) plugs

Connectivity

  • Mobile carriers: Entel, Movistar, Claro, WOM
  • eSIM: Supported—Airalo, Holafly work well
  • SIM cards: Available at airport and shopping malls; passport required
  • WiFi: Free at airports, hotels, cafes, shopping malls
  • Data: 4G coverage good in cities and along main highways; limited in Patagonia and remote areas

Safety

Chile is one of South America's safest countries:

  • Standard urban precautions in Santiago—avoid flashy displays of wealth
  • Pickpocketing reported in crowded areas and markets
  • Use Uber, Cabify, or radio taxis rather than street hails
  • Emergency: 133 (police), 131 (ambulance)
  • Natural hazards: Earthquakes common—know building evacuation routes
  • Altitude sickness possible in high Atacama (San Pedro at 2,400m)

Health

  • Tap water safe to drink in most cities
  • Altitude sickness possible in Atacama—acclimatize before strenuous activity
  • Sun extremely strong in Atacama and Patagonia—high SPF essential
  • No mandatory vaccinations for most travelers
  • Good medical facilities in Santiago; limited in remote areas

Language

Spanish is the only official language. Chilean Spanish has unique vocabulary and rapid pace that can challenge even fluent Spanish speakers. English is:

  • Spoken at international hotels and tourist agencies
  • Limited outside Santiago and major tourist destinations
  • Rare in smaller towns and rural areas

Basic Spanish phrases are highly useful, especially outside Santiago.
