Bulgaria

Schengen Area member (air borders from 2024). ETIAS required for visa-exempt nationals from 2025

Overview

Bulgaria is a southeastern European country on the Black Sea coast, offering travelers a mix of ancient history, mountain scenery, and affordable beach resorts. The country serves as a gateway between Europe and Turkey, with growing aviation connectivity through its capital Sofia. Sofia Airport (SOF) is the primary gateway and hub for Bulgaria Air, the national carrier.

For international travelers, Bulgaria provides excellent value with competitive prices compared to Western Europe. The country's Black Sea coast attracts summer tourists to resort towns like Varna and Burgas, served by dedicated airports with strong seasonal charter traffic from across Europe. Winter visitors head to ski resorts in the Rila and Pirin mountains.

Bulgaria is an EU member state since 2007 but retains its own currency, the Bulgarian Lev (BGN), rather than the Euro. The country joined the Schengen Area for air and sea borders in March 2024, with land border controls expected to follow.

Sofia Airport (SOF)

Sofia Airport is Bulgaria's main international airport, located 10 km east of the city center. It serves as the hub for Bulgaria Air and handles the majority of year-round international traffic. The airport has two terminals:

  • Terminal 1: Older terminal, used for some low-cost and charter flights
  • Terminal 2: Modern terminal (opened 2006), handles most international flights

Getting to the city: Metro Line 1 connects to the city center (35 minutes, 1.60 BGN). Bus 84 runs to central Sofia (40 minutes). Taxis cost approximately 15-20 BGN to the center.

Black Sea Airports

Varna Airport (VAR) serves the northern Black Sea coast, including the resort town of Golden Sands and the historic city of Varna—Bulgaria's third-largest city. Located 10 km west of Varna city center. Heavy seasonal traffic May-September with charter flights from Western and Northern Europe. Year-round connections to Sofia and select European destinations via Wizz Air and Bulgaria Air.

Burgas Airport (BOJ) serves the southern Black Sea coast, including the popular resort complexes of Sunny Beach and Nessebar. Located 15 km from Burgas city center and 35 km from Sunny Beach. Predominantly seasonal operation (May-October) with extensive charter networks, particularly from UK, Germany, Scandinavia, and Russia. Limited year-round service.

Regional Airports

Plovdiv Airport (PDV) serves Bulgaria's second-largest city but has limited scheduled service. Located 12 km from the city center. Mostly charter and cargo operations.

Other small regional airports exist but have minimal commercial traffic.

Airlines

Flag Carrier

Bulgaria Air (FB) is the national carrier, founded in 2002 as the successor to Balkan Bulgarian Airlines. Based at Sofia Airport, it operates:

  • European network covering 20+ destinations including major capitals
  • Domestic routes to Varna and Burgas
  • Fleet of Airbus A220 and Embraer aircraft
  • Code-share partnerships with Lufthansa and other carriers

Low-Cost Carriers

Bulgaria has significant low-cost carrier presence:

  • Wizz Air is a major player with bases at Sofia and growing presence at Varna. Extensive network to Western Europe, especially UK, Italy, Germany, and Spain
  • Ryanair operates from Sofia and seasonal routes to Black Sea airports with competitive European connections
  • easyJet serves Sofia with routes to UK and Western Europe

Charter Airlines

The Black Sea coast attracts numerous charter carriers in summer:

  • TUI fly, Jet2, Corendon — package holiday flights from across Europe
  • Heavy UK, German, Scandinavian, and Eastern European charter traffic to VAR and BOJ

Other International Carriers

Regular service from Turkish Airlines (strong Istanbul connections), Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, and Aegean Airlines. Turkish Airlines offers excellent connectivity through Istanbul for intercontinental travel.

Getting Around

Domestic Flights

Given Bulgaria's compact size, domestic flights are limited:

  • Sofia ↔ Varna: 50 min flight vs. 7h by train
  • Sofia ↔ Burgas: 50 min flight vs. 6-7h by train

Bulgaria Air operates year-round domestic services. In summer, flights increase significantly due to coastal tourism.

Trains (BDZ)

Bulgaria's rail network connects major cities but is slower than Western European standards:

  • Sofia ↔ Varna: 7-8 hours
  • Sofia ↔ Burgas: 6-7 hours
  • Sofia ↔ Plovdiv: 2.5 hours
  • Sofia ↔ Veliko Tarnovo: 4-5 hours

Train travel offers scenic routes through mountain passes but requires patience. Booking: bdz.bg

Car Rental

Available at all airports. Notes:

  • Road network improving with new motorways connecting Sofia to Black Sea
  • Right-hand traffic
  • International license accepted
  • Vignette (e-vignette) required for motorways, purchasable online at bgtoll.bg
  • Mountain roads scenic but winding

Buses

Extensive intercity bus network, often faster and more frequent than trains:

  • Biomet, Union Ivkoni, and other operators
  • Sofia Central Bus Station connects to all major cities
  • Useful for Black Sea coast destinations

Best Time to Visit

Peak Season (July-August)

Summer is busiest for Black Sea beaches. Expect highest airfares and accommodation prices, especially at coastal resorts. Ski resorts quiet except for hiking.

Shoulder Season (May-June, September-October)

Best overall value. Pleasant weather for sightseeing and hiking. Black Sea is swimmable through September. Excellent for cultural tourism in Sofia, Plovdiv, and mountain towns.

Flights typically 20-30% cheaper than peak summer.

Off-Season (November-April)

Lowest prices except ski season and Christmas period. Cold winters but atmospheric:

  • Ski season: December-March at Bansko, Borovets, Pamporovo
  • Budget travelers find excellent deals
  • Sofia and Plovdiv good for winter city breaks

Regional Timing

  • Black Sea Coast: June-September for beaches, June and September best value
  • Sofia and cities: Year-round, spring and autumn best for weather
  • Ski resorts: December-March, January-February peak

Travel Tips

Money

  • Currency: Bulgarian Lev (BGN). Fixed rate: 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN
  • Cards: Widely accepted in cities and tourist areas. Contactless common
  • ATMs: Widespread. Avoid "dynamic currency conversion"—always pay in BGN
  • Tipping: 10% at restaurants. Round up for taxis

Note: Bulgaria uses the Lev, not the Euro. Some tourist areas accept EUR but at poor rates—use BGN.

Electrical

  • Voltage: 230 V / 50 Hz
  • Plugs: Type C (Europlug) and Type F (Schuko, with grounding clips)
  • Adapters: US, UK, and Australian travelers need adapters
  • Note: Most phone chargers and laptops are dual-voltage (100-240V)

Connectivity

  • Mobile: Major carriers are A1, Vivacom, Yettel (formerly Telenor)
  • eSIM: Widely supported. Airalo, Holafly, or EU roaming packages work well
  • WiFi: Free at airports, hotels, most cafes and restaurants
  • EU roaming: Free for EU mobile plans

Language

Bulgarian is the official language, written in Cyrillic script. English is increasingly spoken in tourist areas and by younger generations. Russian and German also understood by older generations. Basic Bulgarian phrases are appreciated:

  • "Blagodarya" (благодаря) — thank you
  • "Molya" (моля) — please
  • "Da" (да) / "Ne" (не) — yes / no

Safety

Bulgaria is generally safe for tourists. Standard urban precautions apply:

  • Watch for pickpockets in tourist areas and on public transport
  • Use official taxis (verify meter) or ride-hailing apps (Uber—limited, Bolt)
  • Avoid unlicensed money changers
  • Stray dogs present in some areas
