Overview
Botswana is a landlocked country in Southern Africa renowned for its pristine wilderness, exceptional wildlife, and commitment to sustainable, low-density tourism. The country offers some of Africa's most exclusive safari experiences, centered on the Okavango Delta—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's largest inland deltas—and Chobe National Park, home to Africa's largest elephant population.
Despite being roughly the size of France, Botswana has a population of just 2.5 million, with vast areas of unspoiled wilderness. The Kalahari Desert covers much of the country, while the northern regions feature lush wetlands teeming with wildlife. Botswana's stable democracy and well-managed conservation policies have made it a model for sustainable tourism in Africa.
Maun (MUB) is the main gateway for safari tourism, serving as the launching point for Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve. Kasane (KSN) provides direct access to Chobe National Park and Victoria Falls. The capital Gaborone (GBE) handles international connections but sees fewer tourists. Most visitors arrive via Johannesburg (JNB), with connecting flights to Maun or Kasane.
Major Airports
International Gateways
| Airport | City | Role | Major Airlines |
|---|---|---|---|
| GBE | Gaborone | Capital, international connections | BP, SA, ET, KQ |
| MUB | Maun | Safari gateway (Okavango Delta) | BP, SA, FA, 4Z |
| KSN | Kasane | Chobe & Victoria Falls gateway | BP, 4Z |
Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (GBE) — Botswana's main international airport, located 15 km north of Gaborone. Named after the country's founding president. Handles flights to Johannesburg, Harare, Nairobi, and Addis Ababa. Limited tourist traffic as most safari visitors fly directly to Maun or Kasane. The airport has a single terminal with basic facilities.
Maun Airport (MUB) — The busiest airport for tourism and the gateway to the Okavango Delta. Located on the edge of the delta, with direct flights from Johannesburg (1h 30min) and Cape Town. Small but efficient terminal. This is where most safari visitors begin their journey, connecting to bush flights or road transfers to lodges. Aircraft charter companies are based here for flights to delta camps.
Kasane Airport (KSN) — Serves Chobe National Park and provides easy access to Victoria Falls (70 km away in Zimbabwe/Zambia). Direct flights from Johannesburg and Maun. Small terminal with basic facilities. Many visitors combine Chobe with Victoria Falls on a single trip.
Bush Airstrips
The Okavango Delta and remote wilderness areas are accessed via a network of small bush airstrips:
- Okavango Delta airstrips: Each major camp/lodge has its own airstrip
- Moremi Game Reserve: Multiple airstrips serving different areas
- Central Kalahari: San Camp, Deception Valley
- Makgadikgadi Pans: Nata, Jack's Camp area
Bush flights are typically operated by small charter aircraft (Cessna Caravans, etc.) coordinated by safari lodges and operators.
Airlines
Flag Carrier
Air Botswana (BP) — Botswana's national carrier, operating scheduled domestic and regional services. Hub at Gaborone. Operates routes between Gaborone, Maun, Kasane, Francistown, and regional destinations including Johannesburg, Harare, and Cape Town. Small fleet of ATR turboprops and Embraer jets.
Domestic routes:

Charter flights are typically arranged as part of safari packages. Baggage limits apply (usually 20 kg in soft bags).

Getting Around
Domestic Flights
Flying is essential for reaching safari destinations:
| Route | Flight Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Johannesburg → Maun | 1h 30min | Main tourist connection |
| Johannesburg → Kasane | 1h 45min | Chobe/Victoria Falls |
| Maun → Kasane | 45min | Combine delta and Chobe |
| Gaborone → Maun | 1h 15min | Air Botswana |
| Maun → Delta camps | 15-45min | Bush charter flights |
Bush flights from Maun to Okavango Delta camps are the standard way to reach luxury lodges. Flights are typically included in safari packages. Aircraft are small (3-12 seats), and the flights themselves offer spectacular aerial views of the delta.
Baggage limits: Soft-sided bags required for bush flights. Typically 20 kg total including hand luggage. Hard suitcases cannot be accommodated.
Car Rental & Self-Drive
Self-driving is possible but requires careful planning:
- 4WD essential: Even main roads can be sandy or flooded
- Drive on the left (same as UK, South Africa)
- Fuel stations: Limited in remote areas—plan carefully
- Road conditions: Tar roads between major towns; sand tracks in parks
- Distances: Gaborone to Maun is 900 km (10+ hours)
Self-drive safaris are possible in:
- Chobe National Park: Good tracks, day trips from Kasane
- Moremi Game Reserve: Challenging 4WD required, experienced drivers only
- Makgadikgadi/Nxai Pan: Seasonal access, 4WD essential
Not recommended for Okavango Delta—lodges are only accessible by air or boat.
Major rental companies (Avis, Budget) available in Gaborone and Maun. Specialized 4WD outfitters offer fully equipped safari vehicles with camping gear.
Mokoro (Traditional Canoe)
The traditional mode of transport in the Okavango Delta. Guided mokoro trips are a quintessential delta experience, gliding silently through papyrus channels with a poler. Typically arranged through lodges or day-trip operators from Maun.
Boat Transfers
Water-based lodges in the delta and Chobe riverfront use motorboats for transfers and game viewing. Some lodges combine boat and 4WD transfers.
Best Time to Visit
Botswana has distinct dry and wet seasons. The dry season (May-October) is best for wildlife viewing.
Peak Season (July-October)
Best for wildlife viewing:
- Dry conditions concentrate animals at permanent water sources
- Okavango Delta floods peak (July-August), creating spectacular scenery
- Vegetation thinner, easier to spot wildlife
- Cool and dry; comfortable safari conditions
- Highest prices and most demand—book 6-12 months ahead
Shoulder Season (May-June, November)
Good value with excellent wildlife:
- May-June: Dry season beginning, flood waters arriving in delta
- November: First rains, "green season" starts, newborn animals
- Lower prices than peak; still good game viewing
- November can be hot before rains arrive
Green Season (December-April)
Lowest prices, different experience:
- Afternoon thunderstorms (usually clear mornings)
- Lush landscapes, excellent birdwatching
- Migratory birds present (November-April)
- Some roads impassable; fewer areas accessible
- Zebra and wildebeest migration in Makgadikgadi (December-March)
- Hot temperatures (30-35°C)
- Many lodges offer significant discounts
Regional Timing
