Belarus
Visa-free for 30 days via Minsk airport for many nationalities. EU/US sanctions affect travel options
Overview
Belarus is a landlocked Eastern European country bordered by Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia. Known for its vast primeval forests, Soviet-era architecture, and UNESCO World Heritage sites, the country remains one of Europe's lesser-visited destinations. Minsk National Airport (MSQ) is the primary international gateway and hub for Belavia, the national carrier.
Travel to Belarus has become significantly more complicated since 2021 due to EU and US sanctions imposed following political events. Belavia is banned from EU and UK airspace, and many Western carriers have suspended service. Travelers typically reach Belarus via connections through non-EU countries such as Turkey, UAE, Serbia, Armenia, or Russia.
For those who do visit, Belarus offers well-preserved historical sites, including the Mir and Nesvizh castles (UNESCO World Heritage Sites), the ancient Belovezhskaya Pushcha forest (one of Europe's last primeval forests), and cities with a distinctive blend of Soviet and pre-war architecture.

Minsk National Airport (MSQ)
Minsk National Airport is located 42 km east of Minsk city center. It is the only airport in Belarus with significant international traffic and serves as the hub for Belavia. The airport has two terminals, with Terminal 2 handling most international flights.
Connectivity: Prior to 2021, the airport had connections to major European cities. Current routes primarily serve CIS countries (Russia, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Azerbaijan), Turkey, UAE, China, and a limited number of other destinations not affected by sanctions.
Ground transport: Express bus to Minsk city center (approximately 1 hour), taxi, or pre-arranged transfer.
Regional Airports
Belarus has several regional airports, but international traffic is minimal due to sanctions and limited demand:
Grodno (GNA) serves western Belarus near the Polish and Lithuanian borders. Limited domestic and seasonal charter service.
Gomel (GME) is in southeastern Belarus near the Ukrainian border. Primarily domestic flights when operational.
Brest (BQT) serves the western border city. Minimal scheduled service.
Vitebsk (VTB) in northern Belarus near the Russian border. Limited operations.
Airlines
National Carrier
Belavia (B2) is the flag carrier of Belarus, based at Minsk National Airport. Founded in 1996, Belavia operated a growing European network until 2021.
Current status: Belavia is banned from EU, UK, US, and Canadian airspace since May 2021 following international sanctions. The airline now operates a reduced network focusing on:
- Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg, and regional cities)
- CIS countries (Kazakhstan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Uzbekistan)
- Turkey (Istanbul, Antalya)
- UAE (Dubai)
- China (Beijing, limited service)
- Egypt (seasonal)
- Serbia (limited service via non-EU airspace)
Belavia operates a fleet primarily consisting of Embraer and Boeing aircraft.
Other Airlines Serving Belarus
Due to sanctions, Western carriers have suspended Belarusian routes. Airlines currently serving MSQ include:
- Aeroflot and Russian carriers (connections via Moscow)
- Turkish Airlines (Istanbul connections)
- FlyDubai (Dubai connections)
- Air Astana (Kazakhstan)
- AZAL (Azerbaijan)
Note for travelers: Many routes that existed pre-2021 are no longer available. Check current schedules carefully and be aware that routing options are limited.
