Introduction
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is the primary gateway to northern Tanzania, serving travelers headed to Mount Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater. Located in the Hai District of the Kilimanjaro Region, the airport sits between the towns of Arusha (46 km west) and Moshi (35 km east), both of which serve as staging points for safaris and mountain climbs.
The airport has a single terminal building divided into domestic and international sections. It is a compact facility -- you can walk from one end to the other in under 10 minutes. The terminal handles just over 1 million passengers per year, so it rarely feels overwhelmingly crowded, though peak afternoon arrivals from European and Middle Eastern hubs can create queues at immigration.
Key facts:
- Single runway (3,600 m), capable of handling wide-body aircraft
- Separate domestic and international departure areas within the same building
- Most travelers are met by pre-arranged safari operators or climbing companies
- A 24-hour medical clinic (AAR KIA Clinic) is on site
- No airside connection between domestic and international areas
- Terminal renovations in recent years have expanded capacity to 1.2 million passengers annually
The airport is operated by the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) and managed commercially by Kilimanjaro Airports Development Company (KADCO).

Getting In and Out
JRO sits between Arusha and Moshi on the main highway (A23). There is no public transit connection to the airport. Almost all travelers use pre-arranged transfers, taxis, or shuttle services.
Travel times from JRO:
| Destination | Distance | Drive Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moshi | 35 km | 45-60 min | Kilimanjaro climbing base |
| Arusha | 46 km | 50-70 min | Safari capital, northern circuit base |
| Arusha National Park | 30 km | 40-50 min | Nearest national park |
| Marangu Gate (Kilimanjaro) | 70 km | 90 min | Most popular Kili route start |
Road conditions are generally good on the paved highway. Travel times can increase during rainy season (March-May and November).
Public Transit
There is no direct public transit to or from JRO. The airport is located on the main A23 highway between Arusha and Moshi, but no scheduled bus service stops at the airport.
Shuttle Buses (Indirect)
Shared minibuses (dala dala) and shuttle buses run between Arusha and Moshi along the highway, but they do not enter the airport grounds. You would need to walk to the highway junction (about 1 km from the terminal), which is impractical with luggage.
Bottom line: Taxis or pre-arranged transfers are the only practical option for getting to and from JRO.
Parking
JRO has a small parking area directly in front of the terminal.
- Short-term parking: Available for drop-offs and pickups
- Longer-term parking: Limited spaces available; not commonly used by travelers as most are picked up by drivers
- Car rental: Avis and local agencies have desks in the arrivals hall. A 4x4 is recommended if self-driving to national parks
Specific parking rates are not publicly listed. Contact the airport or KADCO for current pricing.
Food
Dining options at JRO are limited compared to larger airports. Plan to eat before arrival or after leaving.
Airside (After Security)
- Twiga Lounge by Aspire: Hot meals and drinks included with lounge access (see Lounges section)
- Small café: Coffee, soft drinks, and light snacks near the departure gates
Landside
- Terminal café/restaurant: Basic menu of local and international dishes, open during operating hours
- Coffee shop: In the domestic departure area, with views of the runway through large windows
Near the Airport
- KIA Lodge: 5-minute walk from the terminal. Restaurant serves Swahili and international cuisine. The best dining option in the immediate airport area -- worth visiting during a long wait.
Important: No 24-hour food options are available at the airport. Late-night arrivals should not expect to find food at the terminal.
WiFi
Free WiFi is available at JRO, but do not rely on it.
- Network: Airport free WiFi
- Cost: Free
- Speed: Slow and inconsistent. Adequate for messaging apps but not for streaming or large downloads
- Reliability: The network goes down periodically. Multiple travelers report arriving to find WiFi unavailable
For reliable connectivity, purchase a local SIM card with data or use an eSIM activated before arrival.
Local SIM
SIM card availability at JRO is inconsistent. Vodacom and Airtel booths have operated at the airport in the past but are not permanently staffed. Do not count on buying a SIM at the airport.
Best Options
- Buy an eSIM before arrival: Airalo or Instabridge offer Tanzania eSIMs from $10-26 USD for 1-10 GB. Activate before landing for immediate connectivity.
- Ask your transfer driver: Many safari and climbing operators can arrange a SIM card for you, sometimes bringing one to the airport.
- Buy in Arusha or Moshi: Vodacom and Airtel shops in both towns sell SIMs and set them up quickly.
Carrier Comparison
| Carrier | SIM Cost | Data Bundle | Coverage Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vodacom | TZS 1,000 (~$0.40) | 10 GB / 30 days: TZS 30,000 (~$12) | Best overall coverage in Tanzania. Only carrier that registers foreign passports easily |
| Airtel | TZS 1,000 (~$0.40) | 10 GB / 30 days: TZS 25,000 (~$10) | Better coverage in Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Slightly cheaper |
Requirements
- Passport required for SIM registration
- Unlocked phone needed for physical SIM
- Activation time: May take up to 1 hour before the SIM is fully functional
Cash & ATMs
Currency
Tanzania uses the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). As of February 2026, approximately TZS 2,500 = $1 USD.
USD is widely accepted throughout northern Tanzania, especially by safari operators, hotels, and national park entry gates. However, USD bills must be from 2006 or later -- older bills are routinely rejected. Small denominations ($1, $5, $10, $20) are useful for tips and small purchases.
ATMs
ATMs are located in the arrivals hall, operated by major Tanzanian banks including CRDB and NMB.
- Visa cards are widely accepted at ATMs
- Mastercard acceptance is more limited
- Withdrawal limits: Typically TZS 400,000-800,000 per transaction (~$160-320 USD)
- Fees: Expect a withdrawal fee of TZS 5,000-10,000 (~$2-4) per transaction, plus your home bank's foreign ATM fee
Currency Exchange
Exchange bureaux are available in the arrivals hall. Airport exchange rates include unfavorable markups of 5-10% compared to rates in Arusha or Moshi.
Tips:
- Bring clean, newer USD bills for the best exchange rates
- National park fees, balloon safaris, and many lodge payments are quoted and payable in USD
- Carry small TZS bills for tips to porters, local restaurants, and market purchases
- M-Pesa (mobile money) is widely used in Tanzania but requires a local SIM card
Shopping
Shopping at JRO is limited but includes some items worth browsing before departure.
Duty-Free (Airside)
Operated by Lagardere Travel Retail (Aelia Duty Free), the duty-free area offers:
- Alcohol and tobacco
- Chocolates and cosmetics
- Basic electronics and travel accessories
Souvenir Shops
Several shops in the departure area sell:
- Tanzanite jewelry: Tanzania is the only source of tanzanite. Airport prices are higher than in Arusha's tanzanite shops, but selection is convenient
- Local crafts: Maasai beadwork, wood carvings, batik fabrics
- Tanzanian coffee: Locally grown beans from the Kilimanjaro region
- Books and maps: Guidebooks for Kilimanjaro and safari parks
Most shops are located in the international departure area. Arrivals has minimal shopping.
Lounges
Twiga Lounge by Aspire (International Departures)
The only notable lounge at JRO, located airside near Gates 3-4. Take the stairs up from the departure lounge.
- Access: Priority Pass, LoungeKey, DragonPass, Diners Club, or business class ticket on participating airlines
- Day pass: $30-35 USD at the door
- Hours: 24 hours
- International passengers only
Amenities:
- Hot meals with local and international options
- Complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks
- Tanzanian coffee
- WiFi and charging points
- Reclined chairs with runway views through floor-to-ceiling windows
- Bag storage
Quality: A well-designed lounge with Tanzanian decor. A good option for refreshing after a Kilimanjaro descent or before a long-haul departure. Not crowded compared to lounges at major hubs.
VIP Lounge
A private VIP lounge is available for diplomats and pre-booked travelers.
- Day pass: ~$30 USD
- Hours: 24 hours
- Access: Pre-booking or walk-in
Accommodation
There are no hotels inside the airport terminal, but several lodges are within a short drive. Most travelers heading to safari or climbing do not stay near the airport, as their operators arrange direct transfers to Arusha or Moshi.
KIA Lodge is the closest accommodation, a 5-minute walk from the terminal. This 3.5-star lodge features 40 rooms in rondavel-style cottages, a pool with views of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, a restaurant, and a spa. Free airport shuttle and late-night check-ins are available. Day rooms are offered for travelers with long waits. Other options include Airport Planet Lodge (5-minute drive, good value) and Moyoni Airport Lodge. Budget to mid-range hotels near the airport start from $30 USD per night.
Destination Tips
JRO is the starting point for two of East Africa's biggest draws: climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and exploring the northern safari circuit.
Mount Kilimanjaro
- Africa's highest peak at 5,895 m (19,341 ft)
- Climbs take 5-9 days depending on the route
- Marangu Gate (most popular start): 70 km from JRO, 90-minute drive
- Machame Gate: 80 km from JRO via Moshi
- All climbs require a licensed guide and park fees ($70/day for adults)
- Book through a licensed operator well in advance, especially for June-October and December-February peak seasons
Northern Safari Circuit
Based out of Arusha (50-70 min from JRO):
- Serengeti National Park: 335 km west, 8-hour drive or 1-hour charter flight. Home to the Great Migration (June-October)
- Ngorongoro Crater: 190 km west, 4-hour drive. Dense wildlife concentration in a volcanic caldera
- Tarangire National Park: 120 km southwest, 2.5-hour drive. Famous for elephants and baobab trees
- Lake Manyara National Park: 130 km west, 2.5-hour drive. Tree-climbing lions and flamingos
- Arusha National Park: 30 km from JRO, 40-minute drive. Walking safaris, canoeing, and views of Mount Meru
Practical Tips
- Visa: $50 USD for most nationalities, $100 USD for US citizens. Apply for an eVisa before departure
- Yellow Fever: Vaccination certificate required if arriving from or transiting through an endemic country
- Altitude: Arusha sits at 1,400 m (4,600 ft). Allow time to acclimatize before climbing Kilimanjaro
- Weather: Dry seasons (June-October, January-February) are best for safaris. March-May is the long rainy season with lower prices
- Tipping: Expected on safari and Kilimanjaro climbs. Budget $20-25/day for guides, $15-20/day for porters
- Language: Swahili and English. Basic Swahili greetings are appreciated -- "Jambo" (hello), "Asante" (thank you)
- Safety: Northern Tanzania is generally safe for tourists. Follow your guide's advice in parks and avoid walking alone at night in towns
