About

Vueling is Spain's largest low-cost carrier and a significant player in southern European aviation. Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Barcelona, Vueling operates approximately 150 aircraft serving over 100 destinations across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

The airline is part of International Airlines Group (IAG), the same holding company that owns British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus. This connection provides Vueling passengers access to the Avios loyalty currency shared across IAG carriers. Despite being a low-cost carrier, Vueling offers a more passenger-friendly approach than some ultra-low-cost competitors, with in-seat USB and AC power on many aircraft.

Vueling is not a member of a formal airline alliance but benefits from codeshare agreements with IAG partner airlines and participates in the Avios loyalty ecosystem.

Tips & Tricks

Booking:

  • Book directly on vueling.com for better customer service during disruptions
  • Compare total cost with bags - Vueling can be cheaper than legacy carriers, but not always
  • Fly bundle gives choice between overhead bag OR 25kg hold bag - good for one-way travelers with checked luggage
  • Watch for sales, especially on routes from Barcelona

Bags:

  • Always book bags online - airport fees are 3-5x higher
  • Measure your underseat bag carefully (40 x 30 x 20 cm is smaller than it looks)
  • Weigh bags at home - EUR 12/kg excess adds up quickly
  • The Fly bundle overhead/hold bag choice cannot be changed after booking

Seats:

  • Rows 1-4 have AC power sockets in addition to USB
  • Exit rows (12, 28 on A321) offer best value for extra legroom
  • Avoid DEF side rows 15-27 on A321 - slightly tighter pitch
  • Space Plus seats include priority boarding

At the Airport:

  • Check in online - saves time and sometimes required
  • Barcelona El Prat: Allow extra time at this busy hub
  • Rome Fiumicino: Check-in closes 45 minutes before (vs 40 at most airports)
  • Some airports have check-in closing 4 hours before - verify your departure airport

Avios Strategy:

  • If you fly IAG airlines (BA, Iberia, Aer Lingus), pool your Avios
  • Transfer Avios to BA or Iberia for better redemption value on longer flights
  • Vueling Avios redemptions are dynamic - better for cheap cash fares

Common Issues:

  • Fly Light passengers cannot bring overhead bags - must check at airport for a fee
  • Online check-in closing times vary significantly by airport
  • Peak summer routes from BCN can be crowded - book early

Best Value:

  • Fly Light is genuinely cheap for travelers with just an underseat bag
  • For one checked bag: Compare Fly bundle (includes 25kg) vs Fly Light + bag add-on
  • Fly Grande only worth it if you need flexibility - changes/cancellation rarely needed for leisure
