About
Aigle Azur was a French airline and France's second-largest carrier after Air France at the time of its collapse. Founded in 1946, it was one of France's oldest airlines, with a history spanning over seven decades of passenger service.
The airline was headquartered near Paris and operated primarily from Paris Orly Airport (ORY). Aigle Azur specialized in routes connecting France to Algeria, Portugal, and other Mediterranean and African destinations. The airline built its reputation serving the large Algerian diaspora in France, operating high-frequency service on routes like Paris-Algiers.
Aigle Azur ceased all operations on September 6, 2019, after failing to find a buyer following months of financial difficulties. Despite interest from Air France and other potential acquirers, no viable rescue deal materialized. The airline's approximately 1,150 employees lost their jobs, and thousands of passengers were stranded when the airline suddenly stopped flying.
