About
Republic Airways is one of the largest regional airlines in the United States, headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. The company traces its roots back to 1974 when it was founded as Chautauqua Airlines in Jamestown, New York. After several ownership changes and restructurings, the airline became Republic Airways Holdings in 1999 and relocated its headquarters to Indianapolis in 2001.
Important: Republic Airways does not sell tickets directly to passengers. The airline operates flights exclusively under capacity purchase agreements (CPAs) with major US carriers:
- American Eagle (for American Airlines)
- Delta Connection (for Delta Air Lines)
- United Express (for United Airlines)
When you book a flight operated by Republic Airways, you purchase your ticket through the major airline partner. The flight will be marketed as an American, Delta, or United flight, even though the aircraft and crew belong to Republic Airways. Under this "capacity purchase agreement" model, Republic provides the aircraft and crew while the major airline handles ticketing, marketing, pricing, and customer service.
Republic Airways operates approximately 1,000 daily flights to over 100 destinations across the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and Central America. The airline has grown to become one of the largest E175 operators in the world and is a critical regional partner for all three major US legacy carriers.

Baggage Policy
Republic Airways does not set baggage policies. All baggage rules, fees, and allowances are determined by the major airline whose ticket you purchased.
Carry-On Considerations
E175 aircraft have standard-sized overhead bins that accommodate most carry-on bags. However, during full flights, you may be asked to gate-check your bag at no charge.
Gate-check process:
- Bring your carry-on to the gate as normal
- If gate-checking is required, staff will tag your bag
- Retrieve the bag at your destination at the jet bridge door (not baggage claim)
- Remove valuables and medications before gate-checking
Tip: A personal item that fits under the seat is guaranteed cabin space. Pack essentials in your personal item in case your carry-on is gate-checked.
Checked Baggage
Contact the operating major airline for baggage fees and policies:

Special Items on Regional Aircraft
Regional jets have limited cargo hold space. Oversized items (golf clubs, skis, musical instruments) may not fit and could be sent on a later flight. When checking sports equipment:
- Notify the gate agent at boarding
- Arrive early to ensure space is available
- Consider shipping ahead for essential items

Tips & Tricks
Booking
- Can't find availability? Regional routes often have limited frequency—check alternate dates
- Connecting flights: Allow 60-90 minutes minimum when connecting to/from regional flights
- Same ticket: Always book regional connections on the same ticket as your mainline flight for protection during delays
- Aircraft type: Check "Operated by" to confirm you're on a Republic E175 vs. other regional aircraft
At the Airport
- Arrive early: Regional check-in lines can be longer at major hub airports
- Gate location: Regional gates are sometimes in separate concourses—check walking time
- Board on time: Overhead bin space on regional jets fills quickly
- Gate-check valuables: Remove electronics, medications, and essential items before gate-checking bags
During the Flight
- Bring entertainment: Download content before your trip; WiFi may be unavailable or slow
- Charge devices: USB power is available but bring backup battery for longer trips
- No middle seats: E175's 2-2 configuration means every seat is window or aisle
- Dress for temperature: Regional aircraft cabins can vary in temperature
Understanding Flight Numbers
Regional flight indicators by airline:
- American Eagle: Flight numbers often 3000-5999
- Delta Connection: Flight numbers often 3000-5999
- United Express: Flight numbers often 3000-6999
Check "Operated by" in flight details to confirm the operating carrier.
Best Seat Choices on E175
First Class:
- Seats 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A: Single seats on left side—best for privacy and guaranteed aisle access
- Row 1: Most legroom but no floor storage during takeoff/landing
Economy:
- Rows 5-7: First economy rows after First Class—typically reserved for elites
- Exit row (where available): Extra legroom
- Avoid last rows: Near lavatory, may be noisy, limited recline
Weather and Delays
Regional aircraft are subject to the same weather and ATC delays as mainline jets. During severe weather:
- Check the partner airline's app for real-time updates
- Have flexible plans for tight connections
- Consider booking earlier connections during winter months at weather-prone hubs
For Nervous Flyers
- Regional jets are certified to the same FAA safety standards as larger aircraft
- Republic Airways has an excellent safety record
- Turbulence may feel more pronounced on smaller aircraft but is equally safe
- Flight crews are fully trained and FAA-certified
