About

Yakutia Airlines (Aviakompaniya Yakutiya) is a regional carrier based in Yakutsk, the capital of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) in the Russian Far East. Founded in 2002 through the merger of Sakha Avia and Yakut Airlines, the airline is owned by the government of the Republic of Sakha and serves as a vital transportation link for one of the most remote and climatically extreme regions on Earth.

The airline operates domestic services throughout Russia with a particular focus on connecting remote communities across Siberia and the Russian Far East to major cities like Moscow. Yakutia Airlines is notable for operating in some of the coldest conditions on the planet, where winter temperatures regularly drop below -40C (-40F). The carrier plays an essential role in providing year-round air service to communities that would otherwise be inaccessible during the harsh Siberian winter months.

Yakutia Airlines is not a member of any global airline alliance. The airline operates independently, though in 2020 it became part of a consolidated Far Eastern airline group alongside other regional Russian carriers.

Tips & Tricks

Booking:

  • Book directly through yakutia.aero for best support if issues arise
  • Book well in advance for routes to remote communities, as flights may operate only a few times per week
  • Check seasonal schedule changes, as some routes operate only during certain periods

Preparing for Extreme Cold:

  • Winter travelers should dress in layers with proper cold-weather gear
  • Temperatures at remote airports can be -40C (-40F) or colder
  • Airport terminals at smaller destinations may have limited heating
  • Battery-powered devices may drain quickly in extreme cold

At the Airport:

  • Arrive early at Yakutsk Airport during peak travel periods
  • Allow extra time for connections in Moscow when traveling from the Far East
  • Be prepared for potential delays during severe winter weather
  • Smaller regional airports may have very basic facilities

Packing:

  • Take advantage of the generous 20 kg checked baggage allowance
  • Pack essentials in carry-on in case checked bags are delayed to remote destinations
  • Bring warm clothing in carry-on during winter travel

Remote Airport Operations:

  • Some airports have gravel or unpaved runways
  • Facilities at remote airports are minimal (limited or no restaurants, basic terminals)
  • Ground transportation from remote airports may be limited; arrange transfers in advance

Important Considerations:

  • As of 2025, Yakutia Airlines is banned from operating in European Union airspace
  • International travel options are limited to destinations in Russia and select Asian countries
  • Verify current route availability before booking, as network may change seasonally
