About
Air Malta ceased operations on March 31, 2024. This guide is preserved for historical reference. The airline was replaced by KM Malta Airlines, a completely new carrier with a separate Air Operator's Certificate (AOC).
Air Malta was the flag carrier airline of Malta, headquartered in Luqa near Malta International Airport. Founded in 1973, the airline served as Malta's national carrier for over 50 years, connecting the Mediterranean island nation to destinations across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
At its peak, Air Malta operated a network of approximately 35 destinations, primarily serving leisure travelers visiting Malta and Maltese citizens traveling abroad. The airline was wholly owned by the Government of Malta and played a crucial role in supporting the country's tourism industry.
Air Malta was not a member of any global airline alliance, though it maintained codeshare partnerships with several European carriers to extend its network reach.
After years of financial struggles and multiple restructuring attempts, Air Malta ceased all operations on March 31, 2024. The airline was replaced by KM Malta Airlines, which began operations on the same date but operates as an entirely new airline with fresh ownership structure and operating certificate.
