About

Adria Airways ceased all operations on September 30, 2019, following financial collapse. This guide provides historical information about the airline.

Adria Airways was the flag carrier of Slovenia, headquartered in Ljubljana. At its peak, the airline operated a fleet of regional jets connecting Slovenia's small but strategically located capital to major European cities and served as an important link between the Balkans and Western Europe.

Founded in 1961 as Adria Aviopromet, the airline operated charter flights throughout the Yugoslav era. After Slovenian independence in 1991, Adria Airways became the new nation's flag carrier, rebranding and modernizing its fleet and operations for the European market.

Adria Airways joined the Star Alliance in June 2004, becoming the first airline from a former Yugoslav republic to join a major global airline alliance. This membership provided Slovenian travelers with connections to over 1,300 destinations worldwide through partners like Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, and Swiss.

The airline operated primarily regional aircraft, focusing on connecting Ljubljana to European business and leisure destinations. At its height, Adria served approximately 1 million passengers annually, punching above its weight for a carrier from a nation of only 2 million people.

Financial difficulties plagued Adria throughout the 2010s. Multiple ownership changes, including acquisition by German investment fund 4K Invest in 2016, failed to stabilize the carrier. After repeated cash injections proved insufficient and several aircraft were grounded due to unpaid leases, Adria Airways filed for insolvency on September 23, 2019, ceasing all operations one week later.
