Introduction
Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) is East Africa's busiest airport, serving Nairobi, Kenya's capital and the gateway to world-famous safari destinations. Located 18 km southeast of Nairobi's central business district in the Embakasi suburb, the airport handles over 9 million passengers annually and serves as the primary hub for Kenya Airways, the only African member of the SkyTeam alliance.
The airport has two terminals with Terminal 1 organized as a semi-circular complex:
- Terminal 1A: International departures and arrivals, 12 gates. Kenya Airways and SkyTeam partners operate here
- Terminal 1B: International departures only
- Terminal 1C: International departures only
- Terminal 1D: Domestic flights only (Kenya Airways, Jambojet)
- Terminal 1E: International arrivals, passport control and baggage claim
- Terminal 2: Low-cost regional carriers (Fly540, Safarilink), both domestic and international
Terminal 1's sub-terminals radiate from a central circular hub, allowing efficient passenger flow. Terminal 2 is smaller and typically less crowded.
NBO is a critical stopover for flights between Africa and Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas. Kenya Airways operates routes to over 40 African destinations, plus long-haul flights to Amsterdam, London, Paris, New York, Dubai, Mumbai, and Bangkok.
Wilson Airport (WIL)
Nairobi has a second airport, Wilson Airport (WIL), located 6 km south of the city center and 18 km west of JKIA by road.
Airlines at Wilson Airport:
- Safarilink (largest operator)
- AirKenya Express
- Fly540
- Skyward Express
When to choose Wilson over JKIA:
- Flying to safari destinations (Masai Mara, Amboseli, Lamu, Diani Beach)
- Domestic flights on small aircraft
- Faster check-in with fewer crowds
Connecting between JKIA and Wilson:
| Method | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Uber/Bolt | 30-45 min | KES 1,500-2,500 (~$12-20 USD) |
| Taxi | 30-45 min | KES 2,000-3,000 (~$16-24 USD) |
| Private transfer | 30-45 min | KES 3,000-4,000 (~$24-32 USD) |
Minimum connection time: Allow 3 hours between JKIA arrival and Wilson departure to clear immigration, collect bags, and transfer between airports.
Pro tip: Book safari flights from Wilson with morning departures when possible—this aligns with lodge check-in times and avoids afternoon Nairobi traffic.

Getting In and Out
NBO is located 18 km southeast of Nairobi CBD. Travel times vary based on traffic:
- Nairobi CBD: 30-50 minutes
- Westlands: 35-55 minutes
- Karen: 40-60 minutes
- Gigiri (UN area): 40-60 minutes
- Mombasa Road hotels: 10-20 minutes
Nairobi traffic can be severe during rush hours (7-9 AM and 5-8 PM). Uber or Bolt are the most reliable options for visitors. The JKIA Express train offers an alternative to road transport.
Public Transit
JKIA Express Train
The JKIA Express connects the airport to Nairobi Central Station via the Kenya Railways commuter train network.
How it works:
- Take the free shuttle bus from Terminal 1 or 2 to Embakasi Village railway station (15 min)
- Board the commuter train to Nairobi Central Station (20-25 min)
| Route | Fare | Time |
|---|---|---|
| JKIA → Embakasi Village | Free shuttle | 15 min |
| Embakasi Village → Nairobi Central | KES 100 (~$0.80 USD) | 20-25 min |
Hours: Daily 5:00 AM - 9:00 PM
Note: The SGR (Standard Gauge Railway) to Mombasa departs from Nairobi Terminus at Syokimau, about 11 km from JKIA (15-20 min by taxi, KES 800-1,000).
Bus Services
Public matatu minibuses operate along Mombasa Road but are not recommended for visitors unfamiliar with the system. They are crowded, lack luggage space, and routes can be confusing.
For most travelers, Uber/Bolt is the practical choice for reaching areas not served by the JKIA Express.
