Introduction

King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) is Saudi Arabia's busiest airport and the primary gateway to Jeddah, the commercial hub on the Red Sea coast. Located approximately 25 km north of Jeddah's city center, the airport serves as a major international hub and the principal entry point for millions of Hajj and Umrah pilgrims visiting the holy cities of Mecca (95 km away) and Medina (420 km away).

The airport has three terminals:

  • Terminal 1: The main terminal and one of the world's largest single terminal buildings, covering 810,000 square meters. Handles most international and domestic flights, including Saudia, Emirates, British Airways, Thai Airways, Turkish Airlines, and most major carriers. Features 46 boarding gates, state-of-the-art facilities, and extensive retail and dining options.
  • North Terminal: Primarily serves international flights on non-Saudi carriers. Equipped with 22 gates and full facilities including duty-free shopping and dining.
  • Hajj Terminal: A dedicated terminal complex for pilgrims during Hajj and Umrah seasons. Can accommodate up to 80,000 travelers at once, featuring five interconnected tent structures covering 465,000 square meters with 15 domes. Located approximately 20 km from Terminal 1.

The Haramain High-Speed Railway station is integrated into Terminal 1, providing direct rail connections to Mecca (35-40 minutes) and Medina (2 hours) - an essential link for pilgrims and travelers heading to the holy cities.

JED handled over 49 million passengers in 2024 and continues to expand, with plans to increase Terminal 1 capacity by 15 million passengers annually by 2026.

Getting In and Out

JED is located approximately 25 km north of Jeddah city center (Al Balad). Travel times vary by destination and traffic:

  • Jeddah city center (Al Balad): 30-45 minutes
  • Jeddah Corniche/waterfront: 25-35 minutes
  • Mecca: 1-1.5 hours by car, 35-40 minutes by Haramain train
  • Medina: 4-5 hours by car, approximately 2 hours by Haramain train

Traffic congestion is common during peak hours (7-9am, 4-7pm) and can significantly increase travel times. During Hajj and Umrah seasons, expect heavier traffic on routes to Mecca.

Taxi & Rideshare

Uber and Careem (the dominant regional rideshare app) are both available at JED. Pickup points are located at designated areas outside each terminal's arrivals hall.

Rideshare Fares

Destination Fare (SAR) Fare (USD) Time
Jeddah city center 70-100 $19-27 25-40 min
Jeddah Corniche 60-90 $16-24 20-35 min
Mecca 150-250 $40-67 60-90 min
Medina 500-650 $133-173 4-5 hours

Wait times for rideshare can range from 15-35 minutes depending on demand. During Hajj season, expect longer waits and surge pricing.

Taxis

Licensed taxis are available outside all terminals. Look for the regulated taxi stands with metered vehicles.

  • Base fare: SAR 5-6
  • Per kilometer: SAR 2-3
  • Airport pickup surcharge: SAR 20
  • Night surcharge (after 10pm): 10-20% additional

Tip: "White taxis" (unofficial) may not use meters. Insist on metered fare or negotiate price before boarding. Official taxis are clearly marked.

Public Transit

Haramain High-Speed Railway

The Haramain High-Speed Railway (HHR) is the most convenient and modern way to travel between JED and the holy cities. The station is directly connected to Terminal 1.

  • First/Business Class parking: Premium parking reserved for premium cabin passengers at Terminal 1, with direct terminal access.
  • Off-airport parking: Budget lots available with shuttle service at lower rates.

Pre-booking online may offer discounted rates. During peak travel periods (Hajj, Eid, Ramadan), parking fills quickly - arrive early or arrange drop-off.

Local SIM

SIM cards from Saudi Arabia's three main carriers are sold in the arrivals halls of Terminal 1, North Terminal, and Hajj Terminal.

Carriers and Locations

  • STC: Large store immediately after customs exit - generally considered the best network coverage
  • Mobily: Counter near terminal exits
  • Zain: Counter near terminal exits, fastest 5G network

Prepaid Plans (as of January 2025)

Carrier Plan Price (SAR) Includes
STC Sawa Visitor 35 Basic 40 5 GB data, 60 min calls
STC Sawa Visitor 130 Premium 150 70 GB data, 6 hours calls
Mobily Tourist Standard 86 10 GB + 10 GB social, 500 min

eSIM: All three carriers offer eSIM options at the airport. Third-party eSIMs (Airalo, Holafly) can be purchased before arrival.

Tip: STC has the best overall coverage, especially useful for travel to Mecca and Medina. Prices are the same at the airport as in city stores.

Cash & ATMs

ATMs are located throughout all terminals, operated by major Saudi banks including Al Rajhi Bank, Saudi Investment Bank, and National Commercial Bank.

ATM Locations

  • Security branch lobby (24/7)
  • Arrivals halls
  • Near departure gates
  • Duty-free shopping areas

Currency

  • Currency: Saudi Arabian Riyal (SAR)
  • Exchange rate: Approximately 3.75 SAR = $1 USD (fixed peg)

Currency Exchange

  • Al Rajhi Bank Branch: Located between International South Terminal entrance and car rental. Open 24/7. Full banking services plus currency exchange.
  • National Commercial Bank (NCB): Open 9:30am-4:30pm. Currency exchange available.

Tip: Airport exchange rates are typically fair in Saudi Arabia due to the fixed USD peg. However, for best rates, use ATMs and select to be charged in SAR rather than your home currency. Avoid "zero fee" services that may offer poor exchange rates.

Saudi Arabia is increasingly card-friendly, but cash is still useful for small purchases, taxis, and tips.

Jeddah is Saudi Arabia's most cosmopolitan city, offering a blend of historic sites, modern attractions, and Red Sea coastline.

Must-See Attractions

  • Nassif House: Seven-story museum, former residence of King Abdul Aziz. Open daily.
  • Souq Al Alawi: Traditional market with souvenirs, spices, and cafes
  • Al-Shafei Mosque: One of Jeddah's oldest mosques with a beautiful wooden minaret

Distance from airport: 25 km (30-45 min by car)

Jeddah Corniche: 30 km waterfront promenade along the Red Sea. Popular for walking, cycling, and sunset views.

  • King Fahd's Fountain: World's tallest fountain, shooting water 312 meters into the air. Spectacular at night.
  • Al Rahma Mosque (Floating Mosque): Iconic mosque built on stilts above the water

Distance from airport: 20 km (25-35 min by car)

For Pilgrims

  • Mecca: 95 km from JED. Non-Muslims are not permitted to enter Mecca. The Haramain train from the airport takes 35-40 minutes.
  • Medina: 420 km from JED. The Haramain train takes approximately 2 hours.

Practical Tips

  • Weather: Hot year-round (30-40C/86-104F). Best visiting months are November-February when temperatures are milder (25-30C).
  • Dress code: Saudi Arabia has relaxed dress codes significantly for tourists, but modest dress is appreciated. Women no longer require abayas but should dress conservatively in public.
  • Alcohol: Not available in Saudi Arabia
  • Tipping: Not mandatory but appreciated. 10-15% at restaurants, small tips for service staff.
  • Weekend: Friday-Saturday in Saudi Arabia (Sunday is a work day)
  • Prayer times: Shops and some businesses close briefly during the five daily prayer times. Plan accordingly.

Transport Passes

For the Haramain train, book tickets via the official HHR app or website. During Hajj and Ramadan, book well in advance as trains sell out quickly.

Jeddah does not have a metro system, so taxis and rideshare are the primary transport options within the city.
