Maldives

Visa-free on arrival for 30 days for most nationalities

Overview

The Maldives is an archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean, southwest of Sri Lanka and India. Comprising over 1,200 coral islands grouped into 26 atolls, only around 200 are inhabited, with roughly 160 operating as tourist resorts. The country is the world's lowest-lying nation, with an average ground level of just 1.5 meters above sea level.

For travelers, the Maldives is synonymous with luxury overwater villas, pristine beaches, and world-class diving. Velana International Airport (MLE) on Hulhumale near the capital Male serves as the main gateway, with direct flights from major hubs in the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. Due to the geography, seaplane and speedboat transfers are essential for reaching most resorts, making the journey itself part of the experience.

The tourism-focused economy means English is widely spoken at resorts and airports, and US dollars are accepted almost everywhere alongside the local Rufiyaa.

Major Airports

International Gateway

Airport Location Role Major Airlines
MLE Male / Hulhumale Main international gateway Emirates, Qatar, Singapore Airlines, Sri Lankan

Velana International Airport (MLE) is the primary entry point for the Maldives and handles virtually all international traffic. Located on Hulhule island adjacent to the capital Male, the airport underwent significant expansion with a new runway and terminal facilities. The airport features a dedicated seaplane terminal operated by Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA), where guests transfer for onward flights to resort islands.

Domestic Airports

Airport Atoll Served Resorts/Area
GAN Addu Southern atolls, Gan Island resorts
HDQ Hanimaadhoo Northern Haa Dhaalu Atoll
VAM Maamigili South Ari Atoll resorts
DRV Dharavandhoo Baa Atoll (UNESCO Biosphere Reserve)
IFU Ifuru Raa Atoll
KDM Kaadedhdhoo Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll
KDO Kadhdhoo Laamu Atoll
TMF Thimarafushi Thaa Atoll

Gan International Airport (GAN) is the only other airport with limited international service, primarily from Sri Lanka. It serves the southernmost atoll and offers an alternative entry point for resorts in the deep south.

Domestic airports are connected to Male via Maldivian (Q2) domestic flights, typically using turboprop aircraft like the Dash 8.

Resort Transfers

Getting to your resort requires one of three transfer methods:

Transfer Type Distance from MLE Typical Cost Experience
Speedboat Under 30 km $100-300 RT 15-45 min, any time
Seaplane 30-150 km $400-800 RT 20-90 min, daylight only
Domestic flight + boat 150+ km $300-600 RT 1-3 hours total

Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) operates the world's largest seaplane fleet, with over 50 DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft. Seaplanes only operate during daylight hours (approximately 6:00-16:00), so late evening arrivals at MLE may require an overnight stay in Male or Hulhumale.

Airlines

National Carrier

Maldivian (Q2) is the national airline, operating domestic routes between Male and regional airports using Dash 8 aircraft. It also operates limited international routes to Indian cities.

Seaplane Operator

Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) handles most resort seaplane transfers. Bookings are typically arranged through your resort as part of the accommodation package.
