About
ABX Air is an American cargo airline headquartered at Wilmington Air Park (ILN) in Wilmington, Ohio. Originally founded as the air division of Airborne Freight Corporation in 1980 through the acquisition of Midwest Air Charter, the airline operated as Airborne Express until 2003 when DHL Worldwide Express acquired Airborne's ground operations. Due to U.S. regulations limiting foreign airline ownership, the air operations were spun off as the independent, publicly-traded ABX Air Inc.
ABX Air is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Air Transport Services Group (ATSG), an aviation holding company that became the world's largest lessor of converted Boeing 767 freighter aircraft. The airline operates scheduled, ad hoc charter, and ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) freight services primarily for DHL Express and Amazon Air, making it a critical component of express delivery networks across the Americas.
