About

Skymark Airlines is Japan's first successful independent airline and the country's largest low-cost carrier by domestic market share. Founded on November 19, 1996, and headquartered in Ota, Tokyo, Skymark commenced operations in 1998 with the goal of offering Japanese travelers an affordable alternative to the legacy duopoly of ANA and Japan Airlines.

Operating an all-Boeing 737-800 fleet of approximately 30 aircraft, Skymark serves domestic Japanese destinations from its primary hub at Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND), with additional bases at Fukuoka (FUK) and Naha, Okinawa (NAH). The airline also operates seasonal international service to Saipan.

Unlike ultra-low-cost carriers, Skymark includes amenities that many LCCs charge extra for: 20 kg of checked baggage, seat selection, and complimentary beverages are all included in the base fare. This positions Skymark as a "value carrier" rather than a bare-bones budget airline, offering fares typically 30-50% lower than ANA or JAL while maintaining a comfortable travel experience.

Skymark is not a member of any global airline alliance and operates independently. The airline's SKYsmile frequent flyer program rewards loyal travelers with points toward future flights.

Tips & Tricks

Booking:

  • Book directly on skymark.co.jp for easiest changes and refunds
  • Compare with ANA/JAL - Skymark is typically 30-50% cheaper
  • Check the Shinkansen fare for Tokyo-Fukuoka - sometimes competitive, but Skymark often wins
  • Seasonal Saipan flights sell quickly - book early

Packing:

  • Take advantage of the free 20 kg checked bag - rare for an LCC
  • 10 kg carry-on limit is enforced; weigh your bag before arriving
  • Pack layers for Okinawa routes (air conditioning can be cool)

At the Airport:

  • Check in online to save time
  • Tokyo Haneda Terminal 1 is Skymark's base - arrive via monorail or Keikyu line
  • Allow extra time during Japanese holidays (Golden Week, Obon, New Year)
  • Self-service kiosks at HND are efficient and have English option

During Flight:

  • Free beverages are served - take advantage of complimentary service
  • Bring entertainment - no WiFi or screens
  • Seat pitch is good (31") but seats don't recline much
  • Most domestic flights are 1-2 hours - manageable without extras

Route Tips:

  • Haneda-Naha (Okinawa): Skymark's flagship route. Much cheaper than ANA/JAL.
  • Haneda-Fukuoka: Competes with Shinkansen. Flight is 2 hours vs 5 hours by train.
  • Haneda-Sapporo: Excellent value for Hokkaido trips.
  • Haneda-Kobe: Good alternative to Osaka routes.

Compared to Other Japanese LCCs:

Feature Skymark Peach Jetstar Japan Spring Japan

Free seat selection Yes No No No
Free beverages Yes No No No

Skymark offers the most generous base fare package among Japanese LCCs.

Common Pitfalls:

  • Don't assume you can change flights easily - book the right date
  • Gate closes 10 minutes before departure - don't cut it close
  • No alliance benefits - your ANA/JAL status means nothing here
  • SKYsmile points only work on Skymark - no partners
  • No WiFi - download entertainment before your flight
  • Saipan route is seasonal - verify availability for your dates

Best Value:

  • Tokyo-Okinawa: Skymark is often the best value-for-money option
  • Families with luggage: Free checked bag makes Skymark cheaper than add-on-heavy ULCCs
  • Business travelers: Lower fares offset the lack of lounge access
  • Leisure travelers: The included amenities mean fewer surprise fees
