About
Georgian Airways is the flag carrier of Georgia, headquartered in Tbilisi at the iconic Rustaveli Avenue. Originally founded in September 1993 as Airzena by three pilots including founder Tamaz Gaiashvili, the airline began operations as a charter carrier before becoming Georgia's flag carrier in 1999. The airline rebranded to Georgian Airways in August 2004 to establish a stronger national identity.
Despite its flag carrier status, Georgian Airways is privately owned and operates independently from the Georgian government. The airline operates a hub-and-spoke network from Tbilisi International Airport, connecting Georgia with destinations across Europe, the Middle East, and the CIS region. As Georgia becomes an increasingly popular tourist destination known for its wine regions, mountain landscapes, and historic cities, Georgian Airways serves as a primary gateway for international visitors.
The airline faced significant challenges including the 2019-2023 Russian flight ban and the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to restructuring proceedings in late 2021. As of 2024-2025, Georgian Airways continues scaled-back operations while expanding its European network with new routes to major cities including Munich, Paris, Rome, and Amsterdam.
